I just got home a couple of hours ago from my trip to Schuyler, Virginia !!
I unpacked the car, and thought I would post a quick note. I have wanted to go for a while now and I thought with the three day weekend it would be a good time to go. I took Friday off work, drove down on Friday then spent all day Saturday exploring Nelson County and Schuyler. I had a great time and would encourage anybody who can go, to do it. I came back through Northern Virgina and stopped at a few Civil War sites, and then drove on home to Northwest Ohio. I took some pictures, and if I can, I will try to get them posted.
I welcome any questions or comments about my trip.
John

Hi John,
Schuyler and the Blue Ridge Mountains are something very special. I am glad you had the opportunity to visit it. I have been there last year. And I will come back this fall. ;-))

John8486: Nice of you to share!! The last time I was down they were working on remodeling the house. Can you tell me if it is finished??. The pictures at the end of your album..........were they taken inside? ? One more question... Godsey's Store was for sale........what happened with it? Still in operation?? Loved these pictures. Makes me want to go down now. I've always wanted to go in the fall when the leaves are in color. Lori

I would also be curious to know which Civil War sites you visited. I love visiting the battlefields and Virginia is loaded with them.

I'm glad everybody is enjoying the pictures. I'm still kind of on a " vacation high", and looked at the pictures myself several times already.
ssMarilyn: Sorry I don't have more mountain pictures, but every direction I looked, I could have taken a picture. I was traveling by myself and I was not always able to pull over to get a good shot. The view from the Rt. 64 overlook (with the two plaques), was just stunning.
Lorijean: As far as I could tell, yes the house was completed, and open for tours. The gentleman at the store and b & b directly in front took me through and he was very informative. It really is not a very big house. Only one bathroom for 10 people. 5 boys in the one bedroom upstairs, and 3 girls in the other upstairs bedroom. Mom and Dad in the first floor bedroom. The living room was nice sized along with the kitchen.
I stopped at the battlefield in New Market, Virginia. It looked like they had some kind of re-enactment or something going on, so I only went to the museum. The gentleman at the museum said I should stop at the Antietam Battlefield in Maryland, so that was my other stop. I went to the museum there and did the self-guided driving tour of the battlefield. The ranger at the desk gives you a map with important sites to see and you follow the map at your own pace. When I finished at Antietam, I had to decide if I would turn right and drive another 45 minutes or so to Gettysburg, or turn left and head home. The man at New Market said you really need a day, maybe a weekend to see Gettysburg, so maybe that can be another trip someday.
I did not see any For Sale signs at Ike's store, but yes, it was open. One of the pictures I posted is from inside the store, and on one wall they had a big picture of Joe Conley. The current store is a modern store that was built when the original store burnt down in the late 1980's. The other store in Schuyler is Randolph's General Merchandise Store and it is a neat little country store. It is very much like what the store on the show looks like. It has the creaky wood floor, and wood display cases, and just about anything you would need for basic necessities was available. The lady at the store was so nice, we talked for almost an hour. Other customers would come in and say hello and chat, just like they do on the show. There was another store in Massies Mill called the J&K Market. It was a bit bigger but still just like the show.

Sounds like my kind of weekend!! I was at New Market years ago. I've been to Antietam several times. That is awesome! You should see Fredericksburg sometime, we really enjoyed that.
Gettysburg is in my neck of the woods and we go there frequently. (In fact I drove out there on Labor Day - it's my favorite get away to think places) There is definately lots to see and best to take a few days. I love Civil War history, it is fascinating. My kids grew up with it and now at least one of my one grandsons will carry the torch.
Now, back to the Waltons..................LOL
