Watched both of them last night, and I got such a laugh out of the looks on the faces of the family as John Boy lit up his pipe for the first time. It was so funny that I had to reverse it and watch it twice! Also noticed something peculiar... after the family dropped Jason off at the Baldwin's, they were driving down a road and passed some trees full of oranges or tangerines. Does Virginia have this fruit? Also got a real good laugh out of Grandpa and Zulieka (sp) Dunbar exchanging dialogue at the boarding house while Grandma seethed. LMBO!!!! Some of these episodes have alot of good humor! On a more serious note, when Livy and John were laying in bed in the fire damaged house, she was talking about the family and said 'kids' instead of children. That's the first time I've heard her say that. I just thought it was odd because they always say children. I hope I never get tired of watching the Waltons. I don't know what could take its place?

I so know what you mean ~ what if I were to tire of watching? That would be tragic, wouldn't it? ! I loved their reaction to John Boy smoking ~ so funny and so real! I thought Olivia's facial expression was alittle forced ~ where they show her as she is watching the house burn. I'm going to have to rewatch this episode and check out those citrus trees, LOL! I have never heard of them growing in Virginia. I too loved those scenes with Grandpa and Grandma at the boarding house ~ Grandpa sure did like the ladies attention!!

I've been through this series a few times before and am still noticing new things.
I thought Olivia's facial expression was a little forced ~ where they show her as she is watching the house burn. I thought so too, and then one of Grandpa's expressions to Zuleika was kind of forced as well, but still funny! This is one of my favorite episodes.

I know the scene you are talking about.......... you are right ~ it's still funny!! The is one of my favorites too, and isn't it amazing at what was in the attic that didn't burn up! Like ~ Olivia's hope chest that she gave to Mary Ellen ~ it looked as though it had been sitting there untouched for years!

John smoked a pipe in the first season said he gave it up because tobacco was to expensive. Most men smoked back then so why would she look so shocked when John Boy started smoking.

Yes, and the comment about what it's going to do to his lungs. I don't think they'd even heard of lung cancer back then! I used to smoke... am so glad I quit!

The look on Olivia's face is priceless when she sees John Boy with the pipe.

Hi, Spanky Season One's The Dust Bowl Cousins (Cora, Ham and Job Denby have driven in from KS and outstay their welcome) shows that John is a pipe smoker.

It never shows john smoking the pipe just has him putting tobacco in it and saying "I'm thinking about giving it up tobacco is so expensive these days". And later Ham steals a pack of tobacco from Ike's and Erin sees him do it.

Not lung cancer, no, but I think they knew it gave you all sorts of respiratory complaints. I don't think the link with cancer was proved till the mid Sixties or thereabouts. One thing that The Waltons doesn't show at all is that *chewing* tobacco was very common then - a fairly gross habit (and a dangerous one)!

Yes, it's a gross habit. Ever dance with someone (if you're a girl) that chews... and they talk to you. OY....turn your head awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay... I even saw one guy with a little bit of brown dripping down from the corner of his mouth, and he was looking for a gal to dance with. (this was a few years ago)

Doctors were well aware of the damage smoking caused to lungs. I saw a very graphic educational poster for schools that dated from the late 1890s showing a healthy lung and a diseased lung. This was used in Canadian schools but I'm sure the US medical community was every bit as enlightened.
