The statue was, indeed, Lucille Ball, commissioned by the city of Palm Springs, Florida, to take centre stage in the Lucille Ball Memorial Park. With a spoon in her right hand and a medicine bottle in her left hand, the statue was to commemorate one of Lucy's most iconic and beloved scenes: the Vitameatavegamin commercial.
The reaction was far from kind and a new statue was commissioned.
Here is the original statue and the replacement statue side-by-side:

I feel so sad that I am catching up so late about the unveiling of Earl’s statue in Nelson County. I was texting with Mike McGreevey last week and he told me that he and his wife Debbie went back for the unveiling. I agree with everyone that it is a PERFECT likeness of Earl!
Yes - and the other statue Easton wanted people to guess is BEYOND atrocious! I know it was redone. But, they surely did not hire the same idiot - um, I mean the same person who did the first one, right?!? I remember seeing the second one somewhere and thank the good Lord it was much, much better.
I think Earl and his family would have been incredibly pleased with his statue. Does anyone know if any of Earl’s family were there? Perhaps, since Earl’s widow Jane could not attend, maybe their children stayed close by her.
What a beautiful day of celebration it must have been! I saw the photos of all the guests and it looked like it was a substantial turnout - which is as it most certainly should have been! How amazing that all the Walton fans, past, present and future now have a place to pay homage to the original, real life “John Boy Walton!”

Some of Earl’s nieces and nephews were there.
