I forget which episode but was season 8 I think. They had "holiday coffee" stocked at Ikes behind the counter. Wasn't coffee rationed in WW2 and I thought he grounded his own coffee They used a lot of sugar too which was also rationed. They always had cakes and pies durng the war. They didn't seem to want for gasoline (petrol) either. Now John had a defense contract so maybe the Army supplied him with gas since his truck was part of his business and needed for the hauling of the wood he was supplying.

Definitely inspiring. I stopped dipping tobacco a couple years ago. I started when I was 16 and stopped at 33. I started at 16 as well and stopped when I was 55.
When I think how much money I've saved...
The money was my motivation for quitting. My wife pointed out that I was spending around $5.50 per day on tobacco. When I did the math, I realized that I could be spending that money on guitars, tattoos, and other stuff that I like more than spitting in a bottle lol

My roommate smokes and he pays from $12 - $14 for a small pack (20) and from $15 - $19 for a large pack (25). When I quit, a carton (8 packs) cost about the same price as a single package today.

I don’t start my day without coffee, then I continue throughout. Regarding alcohol, I had gone 467 days without a drink until last weekend, and I slipped up. Used to have a bit of a problem with the alcohol (I guess I still do). Day 5 of sobriety now. I'm the same with coffee. I have French press in the morning and then half caff iced lattes while working. That's generally in summer. Occasionally I'll have decaff French press at night. Thinking about it right now. And as far as the alcohol, I'm proud of you. You started over instead of spiraling.

I wonder how Livvies applesauce cake would have been affected by rationing? I'm guessing they used a lot of home grown fruit/veggies to help with rationing. If you are interested in WW2 rationing and cooking Good Fare in Wartime (cookbook)The 1940s Experiment Mostly British rationing 120 Wartime Meat RecipesThe Family CookbookYour Share: Betty Crocker cookbookPretty sure I've posted before. It's not WW2 rationing but close

The URL is incorrect (the '@' sign should not be there), but it's not your fault. Every link to her subscription page that I checked took me to the error page and every URL 'correction' I could think of didn't work, either.
However, here is one of her videos. If you open it in YouTube (click the title line at the top of the video), it will take you to YouTube and there are more of Clara's videos along the right side of the page.

I can't think of any better way to get a bunch of people to want to go to war than to withhold their coffee and sugar. 😄

To jaydub87, I agree with easton - you did it once, you can quit again. Los Angeles may have the most AA meetings in the entire nation. Sadly, addictions of many forms are seen in this town, I think, in higher numbers than most cities.
I have worked for a few actors who were recovering alcoholics and worked the AA program very successfully and very openly. I asked one of them what did he do to maintain his sobriety? He said, " As I look into my mirror, before I start my day, I remember to say those 5 magical words : 'DO NOT TAKE THAT FIRST DRINK!'" It helped!
The other thing he felt was of utmost importance is going to an AA meeting - as often as you need to. He said sharing your struggle with others going through the same thing helped immensely. No one judges. Every one supports you. You learn to know you are not alone facing the challenges of sobriety. Good Luck!

Thanks for the kind words. I’m in a super small town, so there really aren’t meetings here. Just gotta white knuckle my way through! Done it once, I can do it again. But your words are so incredibly kind.

To jaydub87, while re-reading my post yesterday, I realize that I was so focused on the helpful 5 words my actor friend said about not drinking, I didn't use the contraction "Don't" instead of "Do not" to actually make it 6 words! DUH!! "Don't take that first drink!" sounds better anyway. I'm sure everyone on the forum noticed my mistake, but were too gracious to point out my error! I am a college graduate, but math was never my best subject!!
