My mom came up with something today while we were watching The First Casulty. She said Curt should have been exempt because he was the only doctor in that entire area and the nearest medical facility was in Charlottesville at least 20 miles away. By calling him up the community was left without a doctor. Yes the military needed doctors but would the military leave an entire community without medical care?

He could have pursued an exemption, I suppose, but I think it was more a 'sense of duty to his country' that he enlisted. The Mountain still had Mary Ellen and the hospital, but I also think it was a way to get Mary Ellen back into the Walton house and in more storylines.
Just a guess, though.

And Tom Bower was leaving the show anyway, correct?

Curt got through college and medical school on ROTC. I think he was obligated to serve or repay all that tuition. He probably didn’t have the money to repay the tuition. Also, I do think he felt an obligation to serve his country in time of war.
I believe there was some sort of salary dispute between the production company and Tom Bower. He wanted more money, and they didn’t want to give it to him, so he was written out of the cast. Then in Season 9 he was asked to return for the episode where he came back to life, and he refused. At least that’s the story I read somewhere several years ago.

Tom said he would have returned in season nine also, because he’s a working actor, but again, he was not offered enough money.
