Just some examples I couldn't believe happened or didn't make sense
Mary Ellen getting away with being snippy quite often without threat of punishment
John coming in from mill(later seasons) looking like he hardly broke a sweat
Grandpa having his heart attack in porch and John never checking on him (he clearly had been gone awhile because John said" about time I sure thought you went off fishing"

In The Search, Olivia, Elizabeth, and Jim-Bob drive off the road when a tire blows, then get lost in the woods when Elizabeth chases after an escaped chicken. They wander around until they come across a family of bootleggers who pack up and ship out, taking the Waltons with them. The truck stops and the lady orders the Waltons to get out.
Olivia keeps shouting, "Which way is the road?" I never understood why she took the kids back into the woods instead of following the truck... to the road!

My question is just how far into the woods could Elizabeth have gone looking for the chicken before Olivia and Jim Bob found her? I can't see that she could have gone that far that they would be lost since Olivia found her immediately. Jim Bob who knew everything else about the woods certainly should have been able to lead them back out from that little bit of distance that they were in there. I never understood how John and Olivia allowed Mary Ellen to hang around with the Minstrel, a man they didn't even know then at the end of this episode Mary Ellen who didn't do much work harvesting the apples was awarded a trip to D.C. I don't understand how everything in the attic survived the burnout when the entire second floor was burned. Curt being alive. In the final reunion movie A Walton Easter how did the moon landing which occured at the end of July occur BEFORE Easter? .

I don't understand how John Walton didn't hire a body guard for his daughters, who seemed to be under constant threat of predation: Maryellen with cousin Job; Erin with the rich kid (Linda Purl's brother); the Minstrel (He wasn't really interested in ME, but still creepy to think your daughter is running around the woods with a stranger.)

Why John Boy education was sooooo important but not a peep was made regarding Jason or Mary Ellen.
Why Olivia who was a devoted Baptist even considered marriage to John who had a lackadaisical view on church.
Why Elizabeth dresses were so short at first.
Why was John Boy included on approval for Curt to be a doctor there? He was just a college student.
What happened to Marcia in between her getting a job and her date with Hank?

Why Olivia who was a devoted Baptist even considered marriage to John who had a lackadaisical view on church. Given Grandma's religious beliefs, I have a feeling that the younger John dating Olivia was much more religious before he went off to war. After the atrocities he witnessed and the fact that his own brother never made it back to Waltons Mountain, he was changed and, perhaps, questioned a God who could allow such horror and misery. The John who came back from the war wasn't the same John who went.
However, John didn't turn away from God the way Ashley Jr. did.

Don't forget Erin and the painter and the guy in the diner who grabbed her and Jason punched him.

In The Homecoming Olivia says they eloped because her parents didn't approve of John because he wasn't religious and that was before the war. They were already married when John went off to war.

Why Elizabeth dresses were so short at first. I think Elizabeth's dresses were short because it was durng the depression and they couldn't afford new clothes so they had to wear what they had for as long as they could until Olivia could afford new material or an older child outgrew their clothes and they were passed down to the younger sibling. Most likely only John Boy and Mary Ellen would have gotten new clothes and their outgrown clothes would have been passed down. As long as it fit and covered the underwear they wore it. Same with the boys clothes. Their pants has holes and patches but as long as they fit they wore them.

How did Elizabeth get the top of the Ferris Wheel while sleep walking? Sleep climbing?
And speaking of Elizabeth's clothes. Did we ever see her wearing that dress that Olivia made her from that piece of material that the Baldwin ladies gave to her except for the one episode? It would have been a good church dress if nothing else.

In The Burn Out it's pointed out that they lost the 2nd floor including the roof which John is seen repairing so how could the attic survive?

In The Celebration how could John be on the hook for a loan for Ike if he's just co-signing?
In The Abdication A.J. comes back to the mountain a successful writer after it's said in The Literary Man that they never saw him again. Also, why didn't he buy back his watch from Ike?
I'm sure I can think of more but those two came to mind.

I'm sure I can think of more but those two came to mind. I can answer the first one. When you co-sign a loan, you are just as responsible for the loan as the person who is taking out the loan. You're saying that you will pay off the entire loan, if necessary, if the first person defaults. It's a very serious thing to co-sign a loan.

In "The Baptism", during the church scene, Corabeth, Ben, and Mary Ellen, all come forward to the front. The implication is that they are the ones who are actually to be baptized during the later scene at Drucilla's Pond. However, when that scene comes around, there is no Mary Ellen to be seen, either as part of the people to be dunked or the onlookers. Half the episode guides on the net seem to indicate ME is amongst the Baptizees (she isn't - some sort of self-delusion?); others just mention Ben and Corabeth.
I smell a rat here. Was the actress not available for this scene? I note that earlier in S5, there are a few scenes where Judy Norton is present in the indoor scenes, but when the ensemble is seen outside (in front of the house) she is conspicuously not there.

^ Judy mentioned in one of her "Behind the Scenes" videos that the series was filmed in chunks, no matter where or when they appeared in the episode. All of the 'inside' scenes were filmed at the same time, as were all the outdoor scenes and other scenes in other sets. It was much more convenient than setting up cameras and lights and so on several times through the week.
If Judy was missing for outdoor shots for whatever reason, I should imagine that the producers simply thought that the viewers would not notice.
