We all know that the Waltons struggled during the Depression to make ends meet and had to work very hard. When I looked at the other thread about the layout of the Walton home it got me thinking were the Waltons poor before the Depression? Looking at a lot of the things they had in the home like the piano and the furniture and beds, especially in John and Olivia's and the grandparents room, they were nice. The house was also pretty large in size. I know Olivia never had an electric refrigerator until Jim Bob traded the Juke Box for one, but I am not sure they were even around before the Depression. The curtains they had in the living room also looked very nice and maybe they were made by Olivia or Esther.
I just wonder if John and Olivia and Esther and Zeb were doing pretty well before the Depression hit? What do you all think?

The truck is only four years old, but the waltons do not seem to have taken care of it and act like they are stuck driving it because they are poor.
In the episode the reunion where cousin so and so, steals all the moonshine. John and grandpa laugh at the thought of him stealing the truck because it was so old. A four-year-old truck is not old so...
How much money do you have to have if there is no electricity bill (grandma and grandpa had no way to have electricity in that house if you believe the line where Ester states that she bour three children in that bed), water bill (do we ever see their well) and there is no mortgage.

I don't think the Walton family was as wealthy as the Baldwins, but I don't think they were that bad off before the Depression hit. I do believe they always had to work really hard, but were a pretty successful hard working family. Learning about the times of the Depression many people lost a lot even the wealthy. The one thing I think the Waltons had going for them is they provided something that everyone always needed and that was wood. That was their business and even though many times it got really slow it never completely stopped for the need for that sort of business. The same for Ike Godsey and his store. What he did running that store and supplying goods for other people was never going to go out of business completely. People always needed that stuff.

That truck got quite a workout loaded with wood and traveling over unpaved backroads. That is bound to create a lot of wear and tear on it.

Maybe that was purchased by Grandpa and Grandma because Grandma seemed to play it even before Jason.

Well based on the movie The Homecoming, John was working somewhere away from home. I don't know how long he had worked there. I can't recall if he gave up the job because he was laid off or not or if it was even mentioned.

Was The Homecoming right at the beginning of the Depression when lots of people were losing their jobs?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I believe the Depression started in 1929 with the stock market crash.
