I have noticed mostly at the Waltons home and at the Godsey's store that they had the current President of the United States framed photo hanging on the wall. I was wondering when this tradition in homes was stopped? They had both President Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. This is something I have never experienced before since I was born in 2009 and Barack Obama was President of the United States.

At the school where I taught, we had pictures of all the presidents on the wall in the main hallway. We never displayed presidents’ pictures at home though.
When I was growing up, there was nearly always a picture of George Washington and sometimes one of Abraham Lincoln on the wall in school classrooms. When I was in 10th grade, my English teacher looked like George Washington. They could have been twins, and she was a woman! She would stand under that picture of George Washington while she was teaching, and I’d sit there and think about how much they looked alike. I don’t mean any disrespect, by the way. She was a very nice woman and a good teacher too.

I also think Thomas Jefferson might have been on the wall as well. I love that your teacher looked like George Washington. I never had a teacher look like a President, but just last year when I was in the 6th grade my Social Studies teacher who also loved the Arts and Drama loved teaching History and the historical events by dressing up and performing different historical speeches and stuff like that. He would even bring in some of his artsy friends from time to time to help with it. He is an awesome teacher and made learning lots of fun.

For those who have lived a few decades ago, do you feel that people respected the President and leaders more than they do today? I feel that there was a ton of respect for President Franklin Roosevelt by the Waltons family and the community on Waltons Mountain. It was really shown on the episode when he died and they all went and waited for the train to pass by that his body was in to pay their respects.

I’m only 35 (old by some standards lol), but I’ll venture an answer here as a student of American history. People definitely respected the President more in previous generations. We live in a time of “identity politics” where if we disagree on any topic, we must be mortal enemies. Things didn’t used to be that way, even when I was younger. People used to believe that the POTUS was working for the best interest of the American people, and we just don’t seem to feel that way (as a whole) today.

Yea, you’ve grown up in some rough times in our nation’s history. Historically, it hasn’t always been like this. But people today (as a whole) only respect the president if they voted for him/her. It’s a sad state.

It's a great question. I think there are several things at play here. I agree with the concept that we are very divided and we seem to "hate" those we haven't voted for or agree with. There are many changes that have come about over the last several years:
1. We have a 24-hour news cycle. When something happens, it's out there immediately. No one in elected office is allowed the luxury of ever making a mistake because it will be out there (and stay out there.)
2. I've said before that we no longer have journalists -- impartial, objective, trustworthy individuals who merely reported facts. I miss those days. We now have professuonal agitators on both sides whose objective, it seems, is to make you angry. And there certainly seems to be a lot to be angry about.
3. Social media makes everyone -- including the President -- seem more accessible. This takes away that air of "mystery." Can you picture FDR tweeting? It also spawns multiple avenues for individuals to publish their own opinions about anything and everything -- including our elected representatives
It's not all bad, though. We need to keep elected representatives accountable to us and information is power. I'd like to think there's less they can get away with with so many "eyes" on them. At the end of the day, the President is merely a public servant of the people living in public housing that WE all pay for. 😉

And speaking of photos of the President...we have an autographed photo of Ronald Reagan that he addressed to my father. (My father was a high ranking member of the NYPD and he was responsible for ensuring the safety of the presidential motorcades through NYC. The Secret Service, with whom he worked closely, asked the President to sign it for my dad.) It is my most treasured possession of my parents'. My mother says I can't have it though until she ..well, you know. And I'm in no hurry for that. But when that sad day comes, Ronnie will come home with me. (He stayed here for a few days when my mother recently moved because I didn't trust the movers.)
My first horse, whom I had for 16 years, died on the day of Ronald Reagan's funeral. He died on his own -- peacefully in his own pasture. I couldn't help but think that President Reagan needed another good horse in Heaven 💗

My grandmother had a picture of Kennedy.
I use to respect if a person was president even if I didn't vote for them.

I wonder what it will be like when I am able to vote for a President. It won't be the next time in 2024, but in 2028 I will be able to vote and I wonder if there will be any changes in how they do it by then.

^ Just assume there will be changes. With all the election controversy going on these days, there will be changes. Just remember that it is your right to vote in any elections if you wish: municipal, state, and federal.
