I'm told that in the 1950s, you could drive your car into a service station, whereupon four or five guys in jumpsuits would pop into view. They'd clean your windshield, dump the cigarette butts out of your ashtrays, check your oil, spark plugs, water level, tire pressure (including the spare in the trunk) ... all while filling your gas tank. You'd then pay something like thirty cents per gallon and drive off, all without even getting out of your seat. (I vaguely remember experiencing this while a child riding with my father.)
That is quite true. I tried to find a commercial on YouTube which showed it happening. It was called 'Full Service'. These days, they're almost all self-service. I'm not at all certain there are any full-service stations around anymore.

I looked it up and New Jersey is the only State in the United States that has people fill the gas tanks for everyone. I doubt they check the oil.spark plugs, water level, tire pressure, but they might clean the windshield. I have driven through New Jersey with my mom and she has had to stop for gas and they filled the tank.

I know it's just a movie but in a " Back to the Future" we see a full service station

I always did it for price -- NJ is cheaper, although not as much as it used to be. However, having someone pump my gas for me is a nice bonus. Occasionally I get my windows cleaned but that's it. 😊

My first "real" job at the age of 16 was at a full-service gas station. When a car pulled up we would approach the car and find out what kind of gas they wanted. We would then pump the gas and wash the windows. We'd also check their oil and tire pressure if the customer wanted.
That service station is still there but they no longer sell gas. I still take my vehicles there to get repairs performed.

Just a decade or so ago, I'd go to a Jiffy-Lube or some such, drive over a pit, and could sit in my car while they changed the oil and checked a few things, then pay anywhere from $25 to $65 and drive off without getting up.
Lately, I have this done at Tires Plus, but sit in their waiting room (or walk to have lunch at a nearby restaurant). Seems that I always pay $50-$75 (not including lunch!). Might be a better deal, all things considered, but somehow not the same.

I worked at a locally owned gas station in high school (early 2000s) and the rule was that we went and pumped gas for any female customers who pulled in. It’s how that station had worked since the 1960s, and the owner kept it that way until they closed down a few years back.

Does anyone recall what Ike charged for a gallon of gas at his filling station?
