Honestly I've had a rough couple of weeks but I've fallen back on some of my favorite episodes of The Waltons to help me relax. I just watched The Literary Man again and as always loved the the wisdom AJ bestows on John Boy about being a writer. Much like when I was attending film school the first thing I heard in a screenwriting class was write about what you know and always go with your gut feeling although coming from AJ it was like poetry. But then again if you follow closely in most of the episodes there was always that bit of wisdom that spoke to all of us. Whether it came from any of the adults or visitors like AJ it was always sage practical advice about life that ended with that beautiful voice of Earl Hamner Jr. pronouncing the word "love."

The kids were often wise beyond their years as well.
Ben: John Boy, you awake? John-Boy: What'd you want, Ben? Ben: Are you going to marry Marcia Woolery? John-Boy: You want me to? Ben: She makes good gingerbread.
Elizabeth: What holds the stars up in the sky? Jim Bob: They're stuck up there on something. Elizabeth: What makes them fall? Jim Bob: Oh they burn out like electric light bulbs. Elizabeth: How come you're so much smarter than me? Jim Bob: I'm older.
Elizabeth: John-Boy. John-Boy: Yes honey? Elizabeth: Do flowers talk? John-Boy: I don't know Elizabeth, why? Elizabeth: I kissed a hollyhock today, I thought I heard something whisper. What do you think? John-Boy: I think if we learnt to listen we could hear all kinds of miracles.
Ben: John-Boy, what happens if you get married to a girl and find out you don't like her? John-Boy: Better make sure you love her before you get married, Ben. Ben: Yeh but maybe there's things you might not know about her, that maybe she sleeps with her Teddy Bear or snores or wears socks to bed. John-Boy: If you really love her you'll put up with such things, Ben. Ben: Yuck.
Erin: Mama, Mary Ellen is sleeping on the floor. Olivia: Mary Ellen, why are you sleeping on the floor? Mary Ellen: I'm pretending I'm a gypsy, Mama, travelling in a caravan across Bulgaria. Olivia: Try to be home by morning. Mary Ellen: I will Mama.
Jim Bob: Daddy? John: Yeh, Jim Bob? Jim Bob: Will you wake me when you get up in the morning? John: Sure thing. Big plans for tomorrow? Jim Bob: Uh hum. Elizabeth and I are going to dig a hole straight through to China and I want to get an early start.

My granddaughter is staying with me for a few days while her mother is out of town. She’s 15 and had never watched The Waltons until now. We’ve been watching Season 1 episodes all week, and she loves it. As soon as an episode ends, she says, “Let’s watch the next one.” So we do. Tonight we watched 4 episodes, one right after the other. They were The Dust Bowl Cousins, The Reunion, The Minstrel, and The Actress. I’ve watched these episodes many times over the past 50 years, but there’s something special about watching with someone who is seeing it for the first time. The Waltons is without a doubt one of the best tv shows ever, at least in my opinion, and yes, there seems to be a lesson of some kind in every episode. By the way, we watched The Literary Man last night.

It's easily in the top ten best television shows ever.
