I just watched the episodes where the upstairs burned out. I didn't understand the need for the kids to live at other homes while building back. I realize it made for a better story plot, but in reality, I didn't get it. the kitchen area was cleaned out fairly early; why couldn't they have all stayed there? I also didn't understand at first why the kids were sleeping in a tent during a storm when there was a barn where the parents slept. it was also strange that the family didn't pitch in more to help rebuild.
My grandparent's house completely burned down in the 40s. they had two kids and lived in a 14x20 outbuilding until it was rebuilt.

I realize it made for a better story plot, That will sum up most of the reasons for all the goofy things that viewers question.

And why did the Baldwins take only Jason? In that big house they had room enough for all the kids and Olivia to stay with them. It didn't make for a good plot.

That episode reminds of another classic novel that I haven't read. During this episode a reference was made that Robert Louis Stevenson's first draft of 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was lost to a fire.( John Boy lost his draft of his novel) Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is one of long list of classic novels that I haven't read. In fact I haven't read any of Robert Louis Stevenson's novels. ( I have read his poems the Swing and My Shadow, though! 😀) Summer holiday started this Friday ( 20 May) maybe I'll add it to my summer reading list!

Carol,
I understand your point. I thought about that as well. The Baldwins had plenty of room. For some reason, after watching some episodes, it seems that the Baldwins favored Jason. They were always so willing to have him in their home. Also, did you see the episode where they actually asked John and Olivia if they would allow them to adopt Jason?
Maybe he reminded them of someone but it’s clear that they favored him.

^ They liked Jason for his musical talents. After all, one can listen to Enrico Caruso on the Victrola only so many times before wishing for some 'live' Chopin or Schubert on the piano. And I don't believe they would have been so keen on Jason if he played only Jazz and Ragtime.
In their eyes, Jason was cultured enough to become part of their family.

For obvious dramatic reasons they couldn't simply allow the Baldwins to bail out the Waltons whenever they were short of money or other resources.
