I think the greatest loss of the Walton's was the passing of Will Geer because he was so integral to the fabric of the show especially in The Gift. Just like he comforted Jim Bob who felt guilt about making fun of GW in The First Casualty his wonderful words of wisdom to Jason about life and death can bring a tear to your eye. Credit has to be given for those very words to the three story writers of the episode as well as the watchful guidance of Earl Hamner Jr. Despite an occasional bout of stubbornness Grandpa's outlook of life was beautiful and he passed it onto the entire family through those first six seasons. And as for Will Geer what a great casting of a veteran character actor who drew upon his years of hardship when he couldn't get work because of being blacklisted and brought that struggle to the story of a family going through the hardship of the depression.
