The Decades channel, a sister network of MeTV, is running the first and part of the second season of the show this weekend. The marathon started at noon today and goes until 5:00 am on Monday morning.

What gets me is that they did not have to do it. I hate it when that chick screams out Spanky. Its also filmed in a dark manner. Not pleasant.

It's the depression. People would do anything for money.

Doesn't John Sr. come and get JB and tell him that he (JB) did not have to do it? I felt like JB was there observing humans in an interaction that he had not seen before.

Doesn't John Sr. come and get JB and tell him that he (JB) did not have to do it? I felt like JB was there observing humans in an interaction that he had not seen before. John-Boy did it as a lark and I'm sure he would have appreciated the money but I don't think that was a primary motivator. It definitely highlighted some of the desperation of that era that we don't normally see so palpably in the comfortable Waltons homestead. I often think that standards of living of human beings have dropped precipitously over the last 100 years. On one hand, we have invented a lot of modern "conveniences." On the other hand, people are working harder, longer and seem to have less to show for it. My grandmother supported my aunt and sister on her 6th to 8th grade education by becoming a nurse's aide. My grandfather could not be relied upon to support the family and was eventually out of the picture altogether. My mother grew up in the city in a seven-room apartment. Seven rooms in NYC!!! Now you pay $3,000 a month for a studio or small one bedroom. My mother and aunt each had their own bedrooms, they had a separate formal dining room, kitchen, living room and there must have been one more bedroom (in addition to the master bedroom). That's just crazy to me when I think of it. Far wealthier people live with much less than that in the city now.

Dance marathons were big during the Depression. Money was scarce and the marathons were a way of making a few bucks for the contestants and making big money for the sponsors. I can understand why the episode was made. 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?', starring Jane Fonda and Michael Sarrazin, had toured the theatres only a few years earlier and was still fresh in the minds of the viewers.
Fortunately for John-Boy and Daisy, The Marathon ended quite differently than the movie.
