I know that John Boy was intended to be representative of Earl Hamner as a young man, but did Hamner ever give any indication he was actually like that?
What got me to thinking about it was John Boy's hateful, over the top reaction when Mary Ellen accidentally gave away the typewriter in "The Typewriter".
Based on a number of examples in the series, you could say that Hamner was real jerk as a young man.

If you think about it, Clay-Boy Spencer (Spencer's Mountain) was the original John-Boy, both characters created by Earl Hamner Jr. and each portrayed by 2 different actors. So, you have writers writing the characters, actors interpreting the characters as written, and directors directing the actors.
All things considered, I suppose 'based upon' is about as close as we're going to get to comparing Earl to John-Boy.

It seems that John Boy fell for every girl who crossed his path, even one that nearly ran him over at the college and who eventually swiped his class notes he needed for an important test coming up. Somehow I don't get the feeling that Earl Hamner was this kind of guy.

Today a movie came on called "Palm Springs Weekend" with Connie Stevens from 1963. I was shocked to see that it was written by Earl Hamner, Jr.! It didn't seem like his usual themes.

Earl Hamner was a versatile writer/tv show creator. He wrote for various tv shows, he created Falcon Crest, which was totally different from The Waltons. He also wrote episodes for The Twilight Zone, and he wrote the screenplay for the animated Charlotte’s Web. I’ve never seen Palm Springs Weekend. I will look for it so I can watch it.

Hmm, sounds racey. "Palm Springs Weekend is a 1963 Warner Bros. bedroom comedy film directed by Norman Taurog. It has elements of the beach party genre (AIP's Beach Party became a smash hit in July, while Warner Bros. was still putting this film together) and has been called "a sort of Westernized version of Where the Boys Are" by Billboard magazine."

We need to remember that The Waltons is not an autobiography. It was "based on" the Hamner family and their experiences growing up in Schuyler. I saw an interview with Earl Hamner where he said the second John-Boy was actually more like him.

In all fairness from what I've read "Falcon Crest" was originally intended to be more like "The Waltons" than "Dallas in the Vineyards" that it became.

Dayton 3
Well “young man” and jerks usually go together. Aka my son who just recently took the car out when he wasn’t supposed to and totaled it. He’s fine. My blood pressure ain’t.
I finally got through the book Spencer’s mountain and earl probably was a jerk Obviously I enjoy the tv series but The spencer family comes out more from the book. They were a lot more wild in real life (minus the embellishments needed to sell a book).

Seems like I heard Earl asked this once and he said John-Boy really wasn't much like him.
The Earl I met in 2012 and had to pleasure to visit with a few times beyond was the furthest thing from a "jerk" I could possibly imagine. He was sweet, genteel and very grateful that people still cared about his work and by extension, himself and his family.
