I find it hard to believe that is the only thing that will happen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of THE WALTONS. Only Michael Learned at a retirement community fundraiser!

There really is no one to plan reunions now that Carolyn has passed. Other people need to step up to plan it. I would but I don’t have any connections. Plus it would take several people to do it. Of course it might be too late to schedule anything now. You need the hotel, plan the banquet and send notices out to get the fans to come. Plus you need to book the celebrities. Also the cost of the banquet was never enough to cover the celebrity’s fees if you booked a lot of them.

Apparently the cast was planning something. That’s what Judy Norton had said. Not sure what happened. But you’re right. It takes much time to organize it.

Yeah it’s a terrible shame! Maybe Earl Hamner’s family will get something together? Unfortunately, I’m live in Canada so I can’t do much about it. 😔 Personally though, and some might disagree with me, but I feel like this show doesn’t get the same amount of attention and love as “Little House on the Prairie” from the general public. It’s still loved and enjoyed but I feel like it’s fanbase is smaller. Maybe the lack of attention the show gets or it’s seemingly smaller fanbase is because this show’s protagonist started as a 17 year-old whereas the girls on “Little House” were only 9 and 11 when that show began. Or maybe cause there weren’t nearly as many crazy episodes of “The Waltons” like there was for “Little House” (Ex: Baby dying in a school fire, Clown rape episode, Laura held captive by mother grieving her own daughter etc.) I think honestly “The Waltons” was seen as more mature than “Little House” hence why it doesn’t seem to have the same amount of fans. I have thought of starting a “Waltons” podcast after having been on an episode of a “Little House” podcast called “WalnutGrove Cast” last fall. I should really think about getting it going!

Didn't the ladies that run John and Olivia's take up the mantle when Carolyn retired the WIFC, but under a different name? (I still can't believe she's gone.)

Running the B&B is a full-time job that doesn't allow Carole Johnson time for organizing a 50th anniversary reunion, which is a HUGE undertaking as Cin Lou pointed out. The Hamners have never organized a reunion in the past, and I doubt that they would take it on. Ray Castro organized the one for the 45th.

Matt I do have to agree with you about the lack of attention that the show received early on, and I'm talking about here in Australia. I ran a Waltons website for a very long time and was the first to go online. I could hardly find anything about the show but ended up trawling through years of TV magazines to get information, snippets, and an episode list. Took me ages. What I noticed was that Little House on the Prairie was receiving an awful lot of notice but there were very few articles on The Waltons. Both began airing fairly much at the same time out here. Our TV magazines had big glossy articles on Little House and front covers, usually with the whole family in the cart. The Waltons barely had any articles, most were very small, maybe 1/4 of the page, and very few were in colour. I found it very interesting really! I think that most people out here would have known Michael Landon from Bonanza so he had a following here already. Earl Hamner didn't have that same presence here. People may have known some of the shows he wrote for but being a writer they probably didn't know who he was. It's fascinating to see how new shows were promoted out here. There was a lot of Australian content in those magazines, but certainly popular shows were promoted as well. In fact one of our Logie categories in the early days was for most popular overseas show, and the Logie awards made sure to bring popular actors out as presenters. Our Logie awards are really just awards voted for by the readers of TV Week, but it was one of the must sees in the early days of TV. David Cassidy came out one year and so too did Lee Majors, who brought with him an unknown wife, Farrah Fawcett Majors!!

Ooooh, there's gonna be Music on the Lawn. I wonder if it will be some local bluegrass pickers. Maybe Jon Walmsley will bring along his string instruments and request to 'sit-in' .

The Hamner family has never planned anything like that, and as far as I know, the cast has never planned one either. The cast members do get together from time to time, just as a family would, for holidays, weddings, funerals, birthdays, etc. But it has always been up to the fans to plan the reunions. It would be nice if some of the other cast members would attend this event with Michael Learned, but I won’t hold my breath. As nedandres said, Carole at the B&B has a full time job, morning and night, at the B&B, and doesn’t have the time to plan an event like this.

I know the folks on the Mountain are busy but I remembered Forever Friends of the Waltons held this event and there was never a post that it was no more.

It’s strange. The Waltons was higher rated than Little House in its original run, and it was an Emmy magnet. But Little House has had a longer tail. Maybe because it’s more kid-friendly? Or maybe it’s the camp factor. “The Brady Bunch” was never a top-rated show in its original run, but has lasted in reruns much longer than the top-rated shows of the time, such as “Marcus Welby” and “Family Affair” and “Here’s Lucy”.

Carole is planning an event in a few weeks to honor the memory of Carolyn Grinnell and Audrey Hamner. A 50th anniversary would be a huge event, and I heard Carole say that she did not have time to plan something like that, and apparently no one else has volunteered either.

I feel like it's also because Little House is already a well-known book series whereas Spencer's Mountain is just one novel. I've brought up the Waltons to my friends, when discussing old shows, but I don't think they have an idea of what it is.
