Seems to me, she helped Nurse Nora for a spell (time not really specified). When she entered the Nursing program, she could have been 18. and we are not told if that was for LPN (licenced practical nurse) or RN (registered nurse). An LPN program may take 1 to 2 years of college, plus clinical training with a physician and hospital. So she could have finished with the nursing program & training by 20. Medical school she decided later, so I would estimate she began med school in her mid-20s.

Wasn't she still in school when she married Curt? I don't know. I am not sure I get when she actually went in to nursing school. Some say one thing, but I do not agree. When ME and David tell John and Livy that they are getting married, they ask her about her nursing as she worked hard to get in. ME states that she will have her practical nursing even if she does. What does that mean? Does that mean LVN? ME and Kurt work together, but we never see ME in nursing school. Then all of a sudden, ME is trying to get through final exams for her RN and gets strung out on dope trying to do so. So, I am not sure what the answer is to your question.

I don’t think it was ever explained on any episode when she was in school and when she was not. I’m going to guess that she was in nursing school when she met David, and apparently she had enough nurse’s training by the time she planned to be married that she could work as a practical nurse or something. Then it seems sometime after John Curtis was born, maybe when Curt went off into the service, she decided to continue her education. Since she was living at home, I assume she was commuting to Charlottesville or Westham or wherever her nursing school was. Apparently she was taking a heavy course load while trying to be a mother which caused her to become hooked on pills, but she graduated at the end of that episode.

Okay, I knew I wasn't hearing things. I googled "practical nurse" and I came up with LVN and LPN. They are all the same. That is where I was getting confused. ME's first round of nursing school, might have only been a year at most. She might have only been what today is considered a CNA. That would explain why she did not get transferable credit from nursing school to med school. Today, the anatomy, chemistry, and biology classes would transfer www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/nursing/blog/lvn-vs-lpn/LVN vs. LPN: What’s the difference? "The short answer to this? Not much. The differences between LPNs and LVNs essentially break down to where they practice nursing. Only California and Texas use the title LVN, while the rest of the United States uses LPN." "...prior to the Second World War, no state provided licensure for nurses."

Mary Ellen was still in nursing school when she married Curt. You can tell by the uniform she wears. As a student nurse her dress was gray with a white apron. When she became a full fledged nurse her uniform was all white. In the episode The Obsession where she gets hooked on pills she was preparing for her final exam and Curt was the one who gave her her cap at the end of the episode. He also apologized for putting so much pressure on her to pass the exam so they could work together. This was also the last episode Tom Bower appeared in. Curt announced in this episode after the capping ceremony that he was being transferred to Pearl Harbor.

Mary Ellen was still in nursing school when she married Curt. You can tell by the uniform she wears. But do we ever see her going to school AFTER she marries Curt, while he is still on the Mountain. She seems to go back once he is in the armed forces and is no longer really around. And the uniform only might stipulate school, but not what level of nursing. Maybe from a CNA to LVN/LPN/Practical nurse to RN student they wore the same uniform? Why did she have to live at the nursing school in the beginning, but could commute later? They made her, her trunk and gave her the party because she was "going away" to nursing school. Probably one of those writer things again.

I am guessing she took time off during her pregnancy and for a few months after John Curtis was born. I am again guessing that it is because of John Curtis that she was allowed to commute rather than have to live at the school or possibly after the first year students were allowed to commute. It it was not unusual back then for nursing students to have to live at the school for the first year. Union Memorial Hospital here in Baltimore had a nursing school and the students had to live there on the campus for the first year. The hospital is still there but the nursing school closed years ago when state requirements for nursing changed and they required a full college education for registered nurses.

If I remember in The Obsession when Mary Ellen got the results of her exams she said. "I did it" "I'm a registered nurse!"
John Curtis looked to be about 3-4 years old when Mary Ellen took him with her to see the Dean when she applied for pre med at Boatwright.

I was watching the episode where JB is back from the War and Jason just gets back from the war in Europe, and they are both at JBs writing cabin. One of them said they were 24. If JB said it, that could make ME 22. If Jason said it, ME would be 24?
