People on Facebook are saying that today is the 49th Anniversary of The Waltons airing for the first time on television.

Maybe, beginning this time next year, we could all agree to watch the first episode (off of our own recordings) at the exact hour of the broadcast plus 50 years*, and then gather here to discuss it throughout the week. Then do the same for the second show, just to get a feel of how it must have been for the original fans. We'd have a week off if the show had been pre-empted 50 years ago, and have to wait out the summer re-run period.
My wife and I did this in 2006, watching the first Star Trek in its original time slot, trying to see it with fresh eyes. Trouble was, we were occupied in moving at the time, and so missed week 2, and never got back to it.
(*If you can't keep the exact hour, you're allowed to watch it earlier, I guess.)

Did anyone see that PARADE MAGAZINE listed "The Waltons" as a show we were watching in 1971, due to the fact that "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story" debuted in that year? That's 50 years, folks. YAHOO!!!

YAHOO!!! LOL yeah but THAT would make me even older than Dirt. Cant we just say 49 for the show and ignore the Homecoming? I know, I know not fair but give a Granny a break

I like this idea. Maybe use your time zone as The exact hour. I was in CST back then but EST now. What do you think Guys. Shall we plan this

Looking through some old newspapers online, I determined that the show indeed premiered September 14, 1972, on CBS. It played at 8 p.m.in New York; 7 p.m. in Chicago; and in Grand Junction, Colorado (couldn't find a Denver paper) at 6 p.m. -- obviously, simultaneously in different time zones. San Francisco got it at 8 p.m. local. I was pretty sure that the network routinely transmitted to the West Coast on a three-hour delay. I wouldn't be surprised if some parts in the Mountain Time block got the delayed feed as well -- that region didn't get much consideration from the networks. You overseas folk should use Eastern time as the standard.

For those who watched the original run, did you ever watch the other shows on at that time like in rerun or because a member of your family forced you to watch and stole the Waltons from you? I barely remember Flip Wilson, Mod Squad. Dad Brady is in the Mod Squad according to the clipping that was posted.

Which one are we going to use for the first episode? Wasn't The Hunt was first but they played The Foundling instead?

I'd say we should stick to the broadcast order, if indeed we want to experience the show as did the new viewers. Of course, we'll miss the commercials if we're watching online, or on DVD (or VHS). Not!

I've found a complication right away.
September 14, 1972 was a Thursday. September 14, 2022 will be a Wednesday. Y'see, 1972 was a leap year, whereas 2022 is not, so there's an extra day in February of 1972. This would affect every week's show: all of the corresponding 1972 and 1973 dates fall on Wednesdays in 2022 and 2023.
I find that the show had always aired on Thursdays, so it might seem proper to begin the project on Thursday, September 15, 2022.
We get back the missing day in February 2024, so in the third and fourth seasons, the corresponding dates 50 years later will fall on Thursdays. (It goes in and out of sync every two years. We are going to keep this up through 2030, right?)
An alternative is to accept Wednesdays as suitable, and to commemorate the actual dates. The Golden Anniversary Project Committee will have to decide this. You have a bit less than twelve months to do so.
By the way, The Waltons' pilot episode aired Sunday, December 19, 1971, and December 19, 2021 is also a Sunday. I suppose that will be the proper starting date.

^ 1972 wouldn't come into play because the show started after the leap year day. However, there was a leap year in 1976 and one more in 1980. On top of that, there have been 10 leap years since the show ended in 1981.
There really is no way to duplicate the broadcast schedule unless someone here is a math genius.
Anybody have Doc Brown's phone number?

^ Undoubtedly, but I did a Google search and the next time September 14 is on a Thursday is in 2023.
Who's in?
