Was empty houses to be had for back taxes a thing? It seems like there were tons of houses available.

I think abandoned houses were a thing during the Depression. So were abandoned farms. In the 1940 census they actually created a new item to say whether a farm was currently working or not because so many had ceased being working farms in the previous 10 years during the Great Depression.

People probably moved away to find work. I know in my area theres empty homes as the parents died and the kids dont want it or maybe no family left.

To give you an idea of the numbers, in 1932 alone, over 273,000 families lost their homes. In 1933, over 1,000 houses were being foreclosed each day.
Do the math.

^ I wonder if the Walton kids ever drank Ovaltine? I bet they did if they listened to "Little Orphan Annie" on the radio. Of course that was an NBC radio program and everyone knows the Waltons were a CBS family.

^ It certainly would be a treat even if they occasionally enjoyed a mug of hot chocolate (which may have been Ovaltine).
