Hi again, this has probably been discussed before, but we are going through Season 5 and now Grandma is always referred to as being in the hospital, but people visit her and say she sends her love. Did the cast and writers know during Season 5 that Ellen Corby suffered a serious stroke and did they know if she would try to come back? So far the details of why her character is in the hospital are not very clear.
I miss having Grandpa and Grandma together and yes I know that their eventual reunion is short lived, also very sad. I just watched Will Geer talk about the boys who didn't come back from WWI in "The Hero" and I was reminded what a talented actor he was. He has a unique way of delivering lines that make you feel like he was really just an old man thinking about a subject and speaking from the heart and not an actor just reciting his lines. My youngest daughter loves these characters and I don't have the heart to tell her what is coming.

I am not sure that they knew for sure what her prognosis was going to be during season 5. The first part of the Ferris Wheel was her last acting on the show before the stroke.

Ellen failed to show up for work one day and a very concerned Will Geer convinced the producers to go check on her. They found her in her home lying on the floor. She was rushed to the hospital and was written out of the remainder of 'The Ferris Wheel. Still, Ellen's prognosis and recovery were unknown and there was no mention of the hospital for a few episodes, I believe, until they were certain that Ellen would not die as a result of her stroke. When the time was right, Grandma was written back into the show but in hospital having suffered a stroke. Family visited her but Grandma was never shown.
I won't spoil it for you, but after Ellen's recovery and physiotherapy and at her insistence, Grandma Comes Home.

We don’t get any details on Grandma’s illness until the episode where she returns. As Easton said, there was uncertainty around whether she would return at all so they kept things vague.

I was always impressed at Corby's ability to act the way she did even when still suffering from the results of the stroke.
