I don't mean this as an insult but Olivia and Esther seemed to be more spiritual than their husbands. The boys go to church but it seems hit or miss for the family in later years.

I've noticed that as the series went on, you see less of the Waltons at church and school, unless it had to do with the episode plot. Because of that, so many pastors and teachers are replaced.

I've always said they really toned down Olivia's character after first couple of seasons

John made it clear that he was not interested in going to church, and we only see him there a handful of times. Grandpa said he went to church for the hymn singing. The boys went because their mother insisted they go, and Jason played the organ. After Grandpa died and most of the boys grew up and could make their own decisions, and Grandma had a stroke, and Olivia left, there really weren’t very many people left in the family to go to church.
The same with school. By the end of the series, only Elizabeth was still going to school.

Haven't churches over all declined?
