Richard Thomas returned for one two-hour episode and one regular episode at the end of season 6, the year after he left. Then he returned for A WALTON THANKSGIVING REUNION in 1993, A WALTON WEDDING in 1995, and A WALTON EASTER in 1997. Now he introduces and narrates the new movies on CW.

As to the first Darrin on “Bewitched”, Dick York. Easton was right and Dick York had unbearable back pain (injured in a movie scene with, I think Gary Cooper) and had to quit due to a myriad of factors: besides horrific pain, he became addicted to painkillers and there was no “rehab” in the ‘60’s. Also, he suffered from terrible emphysema, too. But, several years later, after exhausting his money on health care, not being able to work, just trying to pay for his large family, he became destitute. He married his childhood sweetheart and they had 5 kids. One of the local news stations here in LA heard about Dick being down on his luck and went to his home to interview him. The reporter, at the end of the interview in the studio, emphasized Dick’s plight and encouraged anyone who could send in donations to please direct them to the news station and they would forward them on to Dick and his family. My Dad was a widower by then and we happened to see this news story together during one of my visits. He knew Dick from New York, decades before, and we were both brought to tears seeing this vibrant, proud, talented actor reduced to a very sick man, confined to a wheelchair, having trouble breathing and desperately needing money just to survive. I was reading through his wikipedia entry and noticed him making this altruistic gesture while suffering with his own plight. "While bedridden in his Rockford, Michigan, home, York founded Acting for Life, a private charity to help the homeless and others in need. "

It's also fun to see props end up everywhere. The crocheted blanket on the back of the couch seemed to be in everyone's house. As far as Bewitched, I think I'm the only one on Earth who liked the second Darrin better. The first one just seems too whiny and irritating to me. But the show was funnier the first few years before they started bringing in all the different characters, like Uncle Arthur and Aunt Clara, et al. I'm now wondering if that's the afghan on the back of the Conners' couch. It was funny in the fantasy season when they got wealthy and replaced all the furniture but the new sofa just wasn't right until Roseanne put the afghan on it. I'm OK with both the Darrins. I did like all the special characters. I'd like to hang out with Aunt Clara but I fear she'd accidentally turn me into a tree or something. I get this. I really do. Literally. I know this was not a joke post, but it's coming off as unintentionally funny. Just how I feel after just having finished it. I understand and agree with this, though I don't like that the characters were gone. BUT in season 9 when both Olivia and John were gone, it felt really wrong that they were mentioned like the others, but that the family just acted like it wasn't their house when the kids wanted their bedroom. And John was going to take Livvie to Arizona but it was never said he was going to stay a long time. The audience just knew he left and then....nothin'. That particular departure was handled so badly. In fact, really the web fell apart in season 9. Kind of a disaster, really.

I've always thought of Richard Thomas as the young naive John Boy who didn't know much of the world beyond the mountain other than what he read in books. Robert Wightman was the grown up, more mature John Boy who lived through, (and nearly died in), a war and struggled to make ends meet in a major city while trying to get his writing career off the ground. He was toughened and even at times a bit jaded from being out in the real world.

I agree with you Nobel and will take it a step further and say despite of the disappointment that people felt with Richard Thomas leaving, he didn’t have the characteristics to continue in the role. He grew out of John Boy on the show and in real life. I can’t even picture Richard in the last episodes playing a more mature and laid back John Boy in the latter seasons. If you look at the reunion movies he came back for you will see he is still that hyper person that he was before he left. That is why I say he should not have returned. Once he left he should have been gone. Made no sense to show a humble and mature John Boy (Wightman) and then bring back a completely different personality (Thomas) to play the same character. Made no sense at all.
My regret is that when Wightman took over they reduced him as a character in the background as opposed to a main character. If they had allowed the character of John Boy to continue to shine I think the show would have lasted longer. I really do. Yes, John and Olivia were gone but it would have been nice to see how the new generation progressed. Mary Ellen and Jonesy could have adopted since she could no longer have children, Erin and the land she acquired and her eventual divorce, etc..
Anyway, it’s obvious on this board that I’m a Wightman fan and I take advantage of any opportunity I get to speak up for him. It’s not him as a person because if I bumped into him on the street I probably wouldn’t even know who he was. It’s because of what he did with the character. Even though he played in the Stepfather lll I believe his real character is more like John Boy and we need those figures. Seems he has dropped off the planet but it’s never too late and I hope to see him in a good movie/series again.

They could have also added children by aging John Curtis and Ginny to the ages they should have been in the last season which is 6 and 4.

Interestingly, Richard and Robert, whom he called Bobby, are friends. They appeared together in the TV film NO OTHER LOVE with Julie Kavner.

I think Wightman was fine in the role, but I think it’s obvious that by season nine the show was running out of steam.
