This sounds like a very touching movie that Ralph Waite is in... a deeply moving and inspiring movie - for Families, Christians, and those questioning their Faith... Official Web-site for Movie:www.letterstogodthemovie.com/This portion of an article that refers to Ralph Waite, truly touched me: “Letters to God” shows the truth about the real-life (8 year old) Tyler, who lost his battle with cancer. Kim Dawson (producer) said Tyler “did the Lord’s work” and even on the set his example changed lives. Ralph Waite, who portrayed a neighbor helping Tyler cope and who played the father in “The Waltons” TV show, “broke down” during filming, Dawson said. Waite lost a 9-year-old daughter 50 years ago.
“He blamed God for her loss,” Dawson said.
Waite, 81, a Yale Divinity School graduate, went back to church for the first time in all those years because of his experience making “Letters to God,” the producer said. Read the rest of this article, here:www.decaturdaily.com/detail/54897.html:: Synopsis from www.allmovieportal.com/m/2010_Letters_to_God.htmlA heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, “Letters to God” is the story of what happens when one boy’s walk of faith crosses paths with one man’s search for meaning—the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them. Tyler Doherty (TANNER MAGUIRE) is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy. Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace. To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher and the ultimate pen pal—Tyler’s prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis. The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels (JEFFREY S.S. JOHNSON), a beleaguered postman standing at a crossroads in his life. At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. But the decision he ultimately makes becomes a testament to the quiet power of one boy’s shining spirit and unshakeable faith. Inspired by a true story, “Letters to God” is an intimate, moving and often funny story about the galvanizing effect one child’s belief can have on his family, friends and community. I was aware that Ralph Waite was at one time an ordained Presbyterian minister, but I wasn't aware of the death of his young daughter and that that was what caused him to leave the ministry. That is tragic, particularly if it turned him away from his faith in God and organized religion. I'm glad that the movie encouraged him to attend church, and I hope that his faith is restored. Anyone's death is traumatic, but especially that of a child. I understand that this isn't a forum on religion, but I do look forward to seeing this movie because my faith assures me that God grieves with us when a loved one or friend dies, but especially when that death is untimely. I presume that it isn't coincidental that the movie's release is at Easter time, when I, and hopefully you, celebrate the resurrection of our Savior. I might add, one of the things which endears me to the Waltons is the faith that is portrayed in that family and the fact that they attend worship and pray as a family - even John attends and celebrates the Holy days of Christianity and certainly he lives a moral life. Thanks for bearing with me. Now I must return to my sermon for tomorrow.

I've been keeping up with this film on Facebook for a while now. It looks to be a very good production!! I actually wrote to the little girl who plays Tanner's friend "Sam" in the film. She replied back to me earlier this year. Can't wait to see what type of character Ralph will play, from the trailer he looks to be a kind and caring man. RYAN J.

I, too, was so glad to hear what a wonderful impact creating this film had on Ralph Waite in restoring his faith in God. I pray he will continue to renew his relationship with the Lord... it's a daily walk and it's a comfort to know he can be our Father and Best Friend.
There's a verse in the song, "What a Friend we have in Jesus", that I find especially comforting...
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
It looks to be a beautiful, touching film... and I look forward to seeing it.

I had no idea he'd lost a child either. That would explain why he developed a drinking problem, which he was later able to face & deal with when he started filming the Walton's.
Wonderful post Gator. God is good!

Reading all of this brought tears to my eyes. I see Ralph in my own mind as a very kind, gentle soul. I'm excited about this movie, I can't go see it till it comes to DVD but I'm pretty patient.

Went to see Letters to God, yesterday. A must see movie but a real tear jerker. Ralph Waite looks like he is doing pretty good for his age.
