A lot of history happened between 1972- 1981 the years The Waltons was originally on, 1971 if you count The Homecoming
There were 4 Presidents. The Homecoming aired on December 19, 1971 and the series began in September 14,1972 both while Richard Nixon was in office, continued through Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter and the show ended June 4, 1981 nearly five months into Ronald Regan's first term.
During the run of the Waltons:
We had the Watergate scandal
The Vietnam war was still going on ending in 1975
The Energy Crisis
The last man walked on the moon.
The Iran Hostage Crisis.
Margaret Thatcher became the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of Great Britain
The US celebrated it's Bicentennial.
What else can you think of that occured during the original run of The Waltons?

The Jonestown tragedy in November 1978. More than 900 members of a religious cult died in a mass suicide-murder.

I got married the day before The Homecoming first aired. By the time the series ended 10 years later, I had 3 kids.

Events in Canadian history during run of The Waltons.
1971 - The year The Homecoming, according to the census, Canada's population was 21,568,000. (As of 2020, the population was 37,742,154.)
1972 - Cigarette advertising was banned from television and radio.
1974 - Four women were accepted into the RCMP, the first females ever to become part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
1975 - I graduated Trent University.
- On April 2, the last section, a communications antenna, made the CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario, the tallest free-standing structure in the world. It no longer holds that record.
For those who seek adventure, the bottom floor of the lower observation deck features a glass floor. Certainly not for the faint-hearted or those prone to vertigo.
For those who enjoy the great outdoors, you can exit the tower from the upper observation deck where you can commune with nature above Lake Ontario and Toronto.
1976 - Capital Punishment was abolished from the Canadian Criminal Code on July 14.
- On July 17, the Summer Olympic Games officially opened in Montreal.
1979 - Two Canadian journalists, Chris Haney & Scott Abbott created Trivial Pursuit.
1981 - The Canadarm was used for the first time on a NASA Space Shuttle Mission.

1973: The iconic twin towers of the World Trade Center were completed in NYC, 1 and 2 World Trade Center, standing at 110 floors each. 14 years later, in 1987, I would go to work above the 100th floor of 2 WTC.
