Just finished watching the 1965 Jimmy Stewart movie - Shenandoah. Similar feel to the Waltons, a family with several children trying to make it through the Civil War. Unfortunately not all the children survive.
Several scenes sitting around the dinner table, and a man desperately attempting to protect his family. A very good movie if you haven't seen it.

The movie takes place in a fictional town of Clear River. Based on Valley, Nebraska. The author, Gail Rock (Addie in the movie) graduated from Valley High in 1957 and graduated from University of Nebraska Lincoln in 1961.

I recall seeing it years ago. Another Civil War drama that sort of reminds me of The Waltons in a few ways is The Blue and the Gray. And not just because David W. Harper was in it. The actor John Hammond that played the main character John Geyser reminded me of Richard Thomas. And John Geyser reminded me of JohnBoy a bit. He was an artist instead of a writer, but he left home to work at his uncle's newspaper as a sketch artist. His first assignment was John Brown's trial and hanging. And finally at the end of each episode, the scene would fade into a sketch of the scene sort of like the teaser before the opening credits on The Waltons.

Another book that reminds me of the "The Waltons" is " a Homefront" by Doris Gwaltney. The book opens up during the summer of 1940 in Rural Virginia. We meet Margaret Ann who is going to be a seventh grader and excited about getting her own room because her sister is going off to college. Her plans change when her aunt and her cousin Courtney who live in London England are force to leave London because of the Blitz. At first Margaret is resentful of their arrival and she doesn't like having to give up having her own room and is forced to share it with Courtney.
I just started reading the book, but so far I love it!

Addie is a creative caring girl, not parsimonious in sharing her love.
I help erect a Christmas tree on our front deck each year. The tree is so tall, it takes 3 people to lift it. I put the star on top before lifting the tree. This is the kind of star I use. (21 In. across). It is electric & illuminated by white LEDs. Putting it away between seasons is challenging. To keep it safe from getting bumped or crushed, I wrap it in a clear plastic bag and hang it from a beam on the ceiling of the attic on a sturdy hook.
