I am watching Andy Griffith and Opie comes in to the Sherriff's office and says "Hi Miss Rosemary" to a lady in the office.
Now, Rosemary is probably her first name. Andy Griffith show is in North Carolina.
Why do the Walton kids say Miss Hunter and not Miss Rosemary?
Is there a difference between states?

I think it was a matter of 'familiar respect' instead of a more professional relationship. For instance, Opie never called Helen Crump 'Miss Helen'. It's the same reason that the Waltons called their teacher 'Miss Hunter' instead of 'Miss Rosemary' and the reason they called the Baldwins 'Miss Mamie' and 'Miss Emily'.

One was a teacher, she was in authority. The Baldwin ladies were family friends.
