I've been meaning to post this for awhile but has anyone ever noticed that after the first season John Boy as well some of the rest of the Walton children wore Wallabies? If you were a teenage boy of the 70's you probably had a pair of these good old Thom McAnn suede shoes. Most all of the children went barefoot for a little while but then John Boy started wearing the low cut with some of the others like Ben and Jim Bob wearing the high tops.

I was an adolescent girl in the 70's and I wore Wallabies. They were my school shoes.

We were not allowed to have them because they were not sturdy enough and would fall apart easier.

Not really. It's a very strict policy now and in many ways people are right, it's better to order something from the internet and wait for delivery than to buy everything in a shop. But we can't order products from Amazon because they have become unavailable. Even the shipping has gone up. We went to different shops today and couldn't find what we wanted to buy. Here we had to order yeezys shoes for our daughter. Yes, this is an isolated incident, although in many ways I like to walk around the big shops and see/touch the merchandise better. On the internet there are often discrepancies between the photo/description and reality.

I never heard of Thom McAnn shoes until about 5 years ago. I remember "Earth shoes" from the 70s. I always marvel at them all going around barefoot and cringing, hoping that they didn't step on things especially around the barn and mill. Even though those were sets there was a lot of wood being cut and I can imagine all the stuff on the ground along the roads where they walked, even if it was a back lot. I joke that I didn't wear shoes until college! We lived on a farm but even when we lived in town I always seemed to be going around barefoot. Those were the days!

I've never heard of them. These are Wallabees. Maybe they are called something else in Canada?

We were not allowed to have them because they were not sturdy enough and would fall apart easier. That might depend on who made them, if they were actual Wallabees or a knockoff. The ones I had were great. I made it through two years of school on one pair. Of course as soon as I got home from school they had to come off along with my uniform. I didn't dare play in my school clothes.

I've never heard of them. These are Wallabees. Maybe they are called something else in Canada? I've never bought by brand. I searched Amazon Canada and found out that those boots are available here under the brand Wallabees and are listed as Chukkas. They sell from $180 - $450 CDN.

I noticed that he wore them ages ago, and even mentioned to my daughter that all the boys during the 70's wore those shoes.

I read (maybe on this forum) that on the set of Little House On The Prairie that Michael Landon would not let the child actors go barefoot because of worry of something like that happening.

It was the same on the Waltons. I believe Judy talked about that in one of her videos. In early episodes you see them barefoot at times but they eventually made the kids wear shoes all the time for safety reasons unless of course the scene called for them to be barefoot lke when they ran out of the house in The Burnout.

^ Indeed, and I'm surprised they got away with bare feet as long as they did. It wouldn't be bad on the sets, but out in the lot, there were just too many things the kids could have stepped on. Had they grown up as 'country kids', their feet would have been calloused enough that only punctures would have been an issue, but these were city kids. Their feet would not have been toughened up enough to wander around a backlot.
