I'm just watching The Waiting and it starts with Corabeth and Ike reading the newspaper with the news of John-Boy having been found alive, but injured. Corabeth looks at the picture of him and says "That's a new picture of him, isn't it? Oh I don't like that at all."
I've never really picked up on that moment, but it's such an odd thing to say. What's wrong with the picture? Could it just be a slight joke about him now being Robert Wightman, rather than Richard Thomas? The picture if perfectly nice and there's no reason for Corabeth to dislike it. Later, Elizabeth makes a similar comment, but she likes the picture. I wonder if they gave the negative comment to Corabeth, known for her occasionally snobby attitudes, because they anticipated that many would be saying the same thing? Then had Elizabeth be supportive, to show that the people who mattered still accepted him as John-Boy?
Or maybe I'm reading too much into it! It's just so odd, considering the context, that Corabeth would think it was important to make a negative comment about how he looks in a picture! What do you think?

I’ve watched all the episodes so many times that it’s hard to remember when I first noticed something, but I do know that I picked up on Corabeth’s comment about the picture some time ago. I’ve always thought it was the writers’ and producers’ way of acknowledging that that there was a new actor playing the part of John Boy; hence there was a new picture. I don’t see her comment as negative really. When she said she wasn’t sure she liked the picture, to me she was saying it didn’t look like John Boy, which it didn’t, of course.

I also think it was a heads-up, preparing us for a shock ... and what a shock!!

I noticed that line a few years ago, and it cracks me up every time I hear it. Definitely a joke from the writers - Corabeth is speaking for the viewers.
