I'm no prude, but I really don't want to walk outside and see people walking around naked. I think there should be some boundaries. What did the Dowager on Downton Abbey say about people being nude at some hotel? Something about it being cold and damp and why would anybody want to do such a thing.

Interesting -- I read that book and don't recall that piece. I have to reread it. I'm no prude, but I really don't want to walk outside and see people walking around naked. I think there should be some boundaries. Oh, by all means - I don't think there's a right or wrong way to approach this. Though I'd definitely say it was bad to feel ashamed of your body (because of the mental health implications), I also think a person's boundaries are entirely their own to set. I just thought it was a nice story either way

I share a bedroom with three older sisters (one is now at university and the twins will be attending university this autumn. We have room for other bedrooms but our parents believe it's important for siblings to share bedrooms) so I think nothing of changing in front of my sisters or being au naturale in front of them). But the mere idea of thinking of a guy seeing me in my in my birthday suit embarrasses me. I dress modestly because that's where my comfort level is.

I can imagine life in the Walton household. There were 7 kids in my family as well. Five boys and 2 girls. I'm the youngest boy. I have and older sister and lost my younger sister just before last Christmas. If they were like my family, we shared beds and baths. I can remember bathing with my younger sister and also with my 2 next-older brothers. One would sit at one end of the tub, the other at the other end. I would sit crosswise between their feet. Except for my oldest brother and older sister, I slept with all of my other brothers and younger sister.
Early in the series, Elizabeth and Jim-Bob shared a bed. I imagine that Jason and Ben shared a bed as well as Mary Ellen sharing with Erin. Before he got his own room, I imagine John-Boy shared with his brothers as well. I have a feeling that his room used to be Grandma and Grandpa's room until their bedroom addition was built on the bottom floor off the livingroom. It's definitely an addition as is the mudroom off the kitchen at the other end of the house. That's why there are 2 sets of stairs leading up to the small landing where the bedroom door is and where the steps continue to the hallway upstairs. It also explains why there is the landing inside the grandparents' bedroom and the steps to the left leading down to it. Strong evidence that John-Boy didn't always have his own room. Only when the kids outnumbered the bedrooms did they build the addition for the grandparents and John-Boy, probably into his teens, finally got a room to himself.
The floorplan is logical and more-or-less mimics what we see on the screen. However, in that floorplan, the steps run up parallel to the outside wall of the house as seen from the front. The landing in the hall at the top of the stairs faces John-Boy's bedroom, an impossibility since his room is at the left as seen from the front of the house. In other words, the hall at the top of the stairs appears to go left, and there is no 'left' to go so. Somehow, somewhere, the steps must double back to face the front of the house, but what we see on the screen is contrary to that since, from the landing at John-Boy's room, the grandparents' bedroom door is on the right side at the bottom of the stairs.

We are close-knit, though sometimes my sisters and I do squabble from time to time. And like the Waltons, we hold hands when we say grace during before meals and we do have evening family devotion led by my dad and an evening family prayer.

I just thought it was a nice story either way I agree people should not be "ashamed" of their bodies. Although lately I've been pretty ashamed of my own. 😳 But I also don't think that individual standards of modesty necessarily signify "shame." Even when I had quite the slamming figure, I was very careful how I dressed in the city -- where I was most likely to be gawked at. I found it gross and it made me feel very unsafe. What's worse is my grandmother told me one day I would 'miss" that. Are you KIDDING me? I do NOT miss it!!!

By "ashamed" I mean more, actively not being comfortable in your own body and thinking there's something wrong with it, which is what Mary was writing about in her book - you can be completely unashamed and still be more comfortable being dressed modestly at all times and not want to be naked (or in revealing clothes) around others.

^ Have you ever noticed that a room heats up much faster than it cools down?

^ I live in an old historically-listed building that was build in the late 1800s. It has thick outside walls which include 2 layers of red brick. There is no insulation. My apartment gets sun on the east, south, and west walls, virtually from the time the sun comes up in the morning until it sets at night. Once it heats up, it's still radiating heat into the apartment all night long. I have fans, but no air conditioning.
It hasn't been oppressively hot inside yet. Somehow I've managed to keep it relatively comfortable.
