I can't find the thread or threads now with this question but it has been asked before if John Boy actually graduated from Boatwright. I was watching The Threshold a day or so ago. It's the episode where John Boy is preparing a TV presentation for Boatwright and it is mentioned that JB is an alumnus of Boatwright. Alumnus usually refers to someone who graduated from the school. I guess he graduated but we didn't see it?
Do I have to graduate to be an alumni? You must have graduated to be called an alumnus, plural form alumni. For women, the term is alumna, plural form alumnae. The term alumnus/alumna refers to anyone who attended a particular university (Merriam-Webster definition)

I don't remember an episode showing it. Since he was the golden child, I'm sure they would have made a big fuss over it.
Maybe Richard left before it could be written?

That is what I thought but then since he went to New York to start his writing career you would think that he had graduated before that.

How did it work with Earl? Did he do part of his college and then get drafted or did he start college after the war?

He went to war and then I believe he graduated from the University of Cincinnati when he returned. My personal opinion is that John-Boy didn't graduate from Boatwright.

What city is Boatwright supposed to be in? Richmond?
I'm surprised John-Boy/Earl Hamner didn't attend the University of Virginia, given how often Charlottesville is mentioned and its proximity to the home.

In the show, Boatwright was located in Westham. There is a town called Westham in Virginia, and it is actually near Richmond. But he would not have been able to commute to a college that far away from home, especially in those days when cars weren’t as fast, and there were no interstate highways. It’s 93 miles from Schuyler to Westham. Westham, Virginia

William Atkins cites several episode references as John-Boy progresses though Boatwright. The last one is when he's a Junior (3rd year) in S4/E13 The Nurse. Atkins goes on to say, John Boy graduated Boatwright University, but did not provide a reference.

John Boy started school in the fall of 1934, according to the narration in “The First Day”. In the penultimate episode of the fifth season, right before Richard Thomas’ departure, the narrator says that it is the spring of 1938. The next episode, “The Achievement” (when John Boy moves to NY), takes place in the fall of 1938.
I believe he graduated in the spring of 1938 and we just never saw it onscreen. The timeline in the last 8 episodes of season 5 moves quickly from spring of 1937 to fall of 1938. Odd that they didn’t show it, though.
