I'm watching The Walton's on MeTV.
I've noticed that John's jeans have darker places where back pockets would be, as if they were removed after long use. What gives?

I have always wondered about them as well. It looks stupid. Livy would have placed new pockets if he had somehow torn his off. Just sloppy wardrobe people.

He was afraid of pickpockets when visiting the Big City (was it Rockfish?), and so figured he'd be immune if he lost the pockets.

I assumed they were used as patches.

I think patching material would come from JimB's clothes as his would be pretty well worn out, while John's clothes were at the top of the hand me down hill and had plenty of life in them. Who knows.

The only thing I can think of is for safety reasons because when working with or around machinery, you don't want anything on that could be caught in it, which includes an open pocket. You either wore close fitting clothing or like many farmers, a loose bibbed overall that would be ripped clean off if caught in anything. Though they could have been sewn down.
