^ Thanks for that, and it's completely understandable. There really isn't any comparison between television (or movies) and live theatre. In theatre, no performance is ever the same, either for the performers or the audience. And that's why stage actors can perform the same role 2 or 3 times per day for years. There's nothing like immediate feedback. Acting in school plays is rewarding and fulfilling.🎭♥️

They should have had an episode where Livy gets hit on the head and then suffers from amnesia. Then they could say she forgot about her former life and family. This is the Waltons, not Random Harvest

Michael had already left the first time when it was announced that producers were bringing back the character of John Boy, so I wonder if that's part of the real reason. Unless she was privy to information that they were going to have a new actor portray him. This is my 1500th post. She was in the episode where Robert Wightman made his debut. John and Olivia spent most of the episode sitting next his hospital bed waiting for him to wake up. I would imagine Robert had to audition for the role along with others who were up for the part and likely did so with other cast members so it was probably no secret that a new John Boy was being brought in.

Replacing Olivia would be akin to replacing John Walton. Would not work... no way!

I don't think this would have been such a good idea. It may have closed the door on Michael Learned returning in the first three movies, though I completely understand where you're coming from. In my opinion, the better solution would have just been to have better explanations for why Olivia couldn't come back. It's weird when John-Boy comes back and she doesn't. Maybe John-Boy should have stayed into his coma until the end of Season 9? Then we'd know why Olivia stayed by his side all the time. Or, like others have said, it would be good if she appeared to call or telephone more often - maybe there should have been an episode after John-Boy comes home, where we see Olivia at the hospital and another young man comes in in a similar condition to John-Boy. She knows that there are thousands of young men just like her and just because her own son is better, it doesn't feel right for her to go back to the comfort of home when this is still going on every day... in my head, that's what I imagine her motivation to be, but it's never spelled out on screen.
In terms of re-casting Olivia in general, there's one context that I'd quite like to see it in: a Waltons prequel. John and Olivia could be children, different adult actors playing Zebulon and Esther, with the Daly family introduced so that we can finally see Olivia's family too. We could even see the story of the time Rose risked her life to care for the family during an influenza breakout. In my mind, this would currently be the best way to bring the show back. To keep some connection to the original (in terms of cast) it could start with Richard Thomas as an old John-Boy speaking to his twins and telling them that there are more stories about Walton's Mountain than he wrote up in his book. Then Richard Thomas takes on Earl Hamner's role as the series narrator.

I'd like to go back further and and have John Boy reading Rone Walton's diary to his twins and telling the story of how Walton's Mountain was founded.

Of course, we can wish, but it's unlikely to happen!
