I think when the show added Aunt Rose and her bratty grands it turned a corner. I didn't mind Rose that much but those kids were annoying.

^ That's why they were there for only one season. I have a feeling that they didn't get much fan mail.

Realistically, almost no television program is very good after its 5th season or so. IIRC a noted actor once said that no television program should last longer than five seasons. I've heard more than one reviewer say that a television program tends to peak during its 3rd season and then decline thereafter.
About the only modern television program I've watched that was arguably just as good in its 10th (or 20th) season as it was duringi the 5th was the Law & Order shows. And a big factor in this was that they changed almost all their cast members frequently.

CHEERS had 11 successful seasons FRASIER had 11 successful seasons
Certain British SOAPS ( I don't watch them. Don't like soaps) CORONATION STREET has been on TV for 60 years. 21 seasons I think. EMMERDALE FARM has had over 20 seasons and so has EASTENDERS. .

I think Blue Bloods is just as good -- maybe even better in some ways -- and it's going into its 10th season I think. I prefer the later seasons of I Love Lucy. I really love the last season when they're in CT. I wish there had been a few more seasons of the regular show set in CT.

Some of my favorite show's that lasted long and were mostly just as good at the end are:
How I Met Your Mother - 9 seasons X-Files - 9 seasons Scrubs - 9 seasons Wings - 8 seasons The West Wing - 7 seasons
Not on my favorites list but still enjoyable to watch:
Big Bang Theory - 12 seasons Seinfeld - 9 seasons The Office - 9 seasons Brooklyn Nine-Nine - 7 seasons 30 Rock - 7 seasons Parks and Recreation - 7 seasons

All those listed can be considered exceptions to the rule.
Also, many of those extremely long running television series had massive changes to them during their run. Four example MASH had no less than four major characters leave to be replaced by three noticeably different characters.

With MASH it was done in the correct way !!!!!
No different actors coming in to play the same character unlike WALTONS. JOHN BOY CURT Just for examples Not knocking the WALTONS in any way. Love it, but MASH didn't have the faults that the WALTONS had. There were no problems with continuity or time faults etc.
MASH was much more put together than the WALTONS. It never came apart and finished on a high rather than run out of ideas !!!!
I really do hate myself for ridiculing the WALTONS but facts are facts. WALTONS had many faults. MASH had barely any

Massive problems with continuity and the time line. 1) Colonel Potter having a son and a granddaughter. Then a daughter and a grandson instead. 2) Colonel Potter being in his mid 60s nearing retirement when based on much of his background given in several early episode he would've been only 53 years on in 1953. 3) Hawkeye Pierce's mother and a sister being alive while a major point of a later episode his mother was dead and he was an only child. 4) The Colonel's horse Sophie changing gender several times. 5) The show having 11 years of episodes including a whole bunch of holiday episodes packed into a three year Korean War. 6) Not to mention the legions of mistakes in medical procedures. I could go on and on about the continuity and character issues on MASH.
