why was Uncle Cody's last name Neilsen? It should have been Giovanni or something similar.

Maybe they were related through Cody's mother?

The show never really explored the idea of Olivia's family being Italian other than that one reference in the class reunion episode where Rachel Stubblefield says to John, "You married that girl with the long braids and the Italian name". The first time I ever saw that, I thought they meant Olivia was an Italian name. Now I know the general consensus on this board is her maiden name was Daly. But that still makes no sense to me. I believe some website says her maiden name was Daly. But that was the last name of her MOTHER'S sister. I mean isn't it stated in the menopause episode that Kate was her mother's sister? So it was either her mother's maiden name as well or it was Aunt Kate's married surname. I don't know if it was ever stated if Aunt Kate was married or not. And I cannot recall a single episode where Olivia's maiden name was mentioned.

It's only Wikipedia but still..."The family of Hamner's mother, the Gianninis, were immigrants who came to the United States from Lucca, Italy, in the 1700s." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Hamner_Jr.

It is true here are our original Italian ancestors (Antonio and Maria Giannini ) to America in 1773 . Antonio's son Nicholas was my GGGG grandfather and Earl Hamner Jr.'s GGG grandfather through his mother's side Doris Giannini www.gianninifamily.harding-giannini.com/AGintro.htmKevin Sanders Yorktown VA

Could they have changed their last name once they emigrated here?

Could they have changed their last name once they emigrated here? Many families did that, especially those from non-English speaking countries. My 4th great grandfather emigrated from Germany. His name was Frederick Froehlich, but the name was anglicized to Fraley.

Could they have changed their last name once they emigrated here? Ask the person above your posts. He states he is related to the Hamners.
