In one episode, John-Boy mentioned going to Richmond, and one of the sisters said "Oh, we haven't been to Richmond in 30 years" - and yet it's only 3 hours away - well, maybe a little longer, back then. And I can't remember if they ever owned or drove a car? I'm not sure. (Please, correct me if I'm wrong). I know, in one episode they seemed helpless controlling a car that kept endlessly going in circles in front of the Godsey's store. Their car appeared quite regularly throughout the series. Miss Mamie usually did the driving and, on the rare occasions when Miss Emily got behind the wheel, she usually proved quite adequately that she didn't know how to drive. (More to the point, she didn't know how to stop.)
As for Richmond, there really wasn't a need for them to go. What they couldn't get at Ike's, they could get in Charlottesville, which was much closer than Richmond.

Another reason I loathe Olivia is her forcing the children to memorize Bible verses as a punishment (or penance if you want to call it that). This is a sure fire way to ingrain in children a hatred of reading the Bible and for them to associate it with punishments and other negative things. Completely opposite the attitude a parent should wish to provoke.

For me it's Elizabeth, she is bratty and annoying.

...she really did David dirty. Jilting him at the alter (of the wedding rehearsal...) But would you want someone to marry you if they did not love you? I would not. End the relationship like you are cutting it with a knife. Did she and David get into the relationship quickly? One of my Communication professors said that relationships end like they start. If it takes time to build it, it will take time to end it. And the opposite is true as well.

Nice that you had such a good relationship with the dean. And what a racket that so few of your credit hours transferred. ...I'm still an advocate for community colleges and believe they provide a great service. For relatively inexpensive tuition, they provide a good education for someone looking for a two year degree. It is also a great way for a young person who knows what they want to do to get their core classes out of the way in a focused curriculum and then transfer to a four year university with almost all their credits transferring. Here, here. community college (or junior college) is a great way to get the first two years of your education for almost free. Anybody know why they stopped calling them junior college? Not sure why I did not see this post earlier. Its a good one.

But, if you do not want to be married to me, end it before the alter, but at the alter if that is the best you can do. Then, I need to figure out why I thought you liked me.

As Elizabeth started growing to teenage I developed a dislike for her. She was indeed annoying and selfish. I developed a severe dislike for John-Boy when he reached the point where he was yelling at his parents and at times everyone else.
Olivia worked my nerves sometimes too. I think her and Elizabeth shared the fact that they always wanted everyone home yet when they had something to do, they did it without concern for the others.

One of the things about episodic television is that we tend to forget that each episode is spread though the entire season. They're all happening simultaneously but broadcast individually for our convenience. Does an episode last a day in 'Walton' time? A week? A month? A year? How long was it from the day Curt and Mary Ellen first met until they stood before Rev. Fordwick? We just do not know.

I don't actively dislike any of the main Waltons characters. They're all great, and all get the chance to be the centre of fantastic episodes.
Initially, I didn't like Rose, Jeffrey, and Serena. They represented the show changing as it went on, and on first viewing, they felt forced into the show. Over time, I've grown quite fond of them though, and just accept them as a part of the later show. Now when I watch through, I feel sad that they mostly all just disappear as it goes on.
Curt, if he counts as a 'main' character is someone I love... but I don't like him after his miraculous survival, so maybe he counts? But it doesn't diminish my appreciation for Curt from the time when he actually was a main character.
On a similar note, I love Jason. I think he's a wonderful character. But the version of him we saw in The Waltons' Homecoming seemed pretty meanspirited. Perhaps he's my least favourite main character.

I disliked Mary Ellen in the early seasons and in The Homecoming. And if you get right down to it, she really did David dirty. Jilting him at the alter (of the wedding rehearsal, wasn't it). I realize they were probably looking for a dynamic like Zeb and Esther had with Curt and Mary Ellen, but still. It's better that she realize that marrying David would be a mistake before the wedding than after.

Elizabeth wore too short dresses and Jim bob looked like he never brushed his teeth and Erin was no beauty like she thought Actually they looked realistic for the time. Elizabeth's dresses were too short because during the depression they wore clothes until they were completely worn out or didn't fit at all. As long as the clothes were clean and covered their underwear they wore it. Elizabeth would have gotten a longer dress when Erin's no longer fitting dresses were passed down to her. Except when Jim Bob got the top of Erin's dress as a blouse. LOL No one had bleached white teeth back then and the family likely couldn't afford a dentist and even toothpaste probably would have been a luxury. A popular cleaner for teeth at that time was baking soda. As for Erin I thought she was the prettiest of the girls.
