I’m not a big fan of Elizabeth’s. She’s constantly opening her big yap and causing problems (lying to Miss Hunter than Johnboy is using her books to teach Verdie to read, spreading rumors that Willie Brimmer might be a German spy, telling Tess in “The Children’s Carol” that she’s being sent to Washington, telling newly-adopted Aimee that the Godseys really wanted an infant).
I thought Olivia coddled her too much, especially when it came to her big mouth, instead of punishing her. Livvie had no problem punishing Erin when she was faking sick in the episode where she got her tonsils out.

What about that Mike Paxton character, who was at college with John-Boy. First, he's part of the gang bullying John-Boy (to tears) and then a few episodes later, he's the self-righteous head of a committee who pontificates on chucking people out (in the US, students can kick people out of university??? Isn't that more a matter for the administrators/deans of the place???). Then later he's in a wheelchair and everyone has to go, "Poor boy," and pity him while he acts like a jerk.

Wow! I must say I didn't know that was the same character in all those situations. Anyway, in colleges with the honor system, I think it's administered by the students, not by the deans or faculty. It's part of treating students in college as adults and giving them some authority, I guess. After all, it's the students who are supposed to report their fellow students whom they see cheating. When I was in college (a long time ago) such a system was proposed and voted on by the students. It was rejected overwhelmingly, so professors remained in the room during exams to see that we didn't cheat, and there was obviously no student panel to adjudicate cases of cheating. In the Waltons episode I didn't realize that any of the members of the panel were "friends" of John Boy. In the episode where the friend of John Boy is in a wheelchair and living temporarily at the Walton's, I couldn't figure out what the relationship with John Boy was, or what prior episode he had appeared in. I don't remember the sophomores hazing John Boy or the panel in the honor system episode even having names.

I never put the pieces together and realized that Mike Paxton was in all those episodes. I knew it was the same character that gave John-Boy a hard time on his first day at college and was later the head of the student committee. After watching all the episodes many times, I then realized he was also the friend of John Boy who shared the boarding room. But I never realized he then showed up as the war injured friend that visited the Walton's home. It was only a couple months ago that, thanks to this forum, I realized he was also the injured friend.
I had an experience in college with a student disciplinary committee. I started college at a community college as an aimless young person not knowing what I wanted to do. Spent three years there and earned about 80 credit hours. When I transferred to a 4 year university, only about 12 hours transferred. So I basically started over. Because of that time at the community college, I was older than most of my dorm mates. In my suite, there were six of us and I was the only one 21 and uh oh, legal to buy alcohol.
We threw a party in our suite for the rest of the dorm and anyone who wanted to come. Being a somewhat responsible young man, I did make an attempt to make sure only those 21 and over drank. I checked ID's and marked the person's hand. Inevitably, some minor's did consume alcohol and the RA (resident assistant) busted up the party. I was then brought up on university charges of hosting an illegal party and allowing underage consumption.
The all student committee found me guilty. I don't remember what the punishment was. However, I was allowed an appeal and had a hearing in front of the dean of students. I explained my position and was able to prove I checked ID's and marked the hands of those over 21. He overturned the finding of guilt and only placed a written warning on my record.
I had a few other run ins with that dean for my and my suite's attempts at having a fun college experience. He was a super cool dean and seemed to understand our antics. Each time I appeared in front of him, I was able to make a reasonable argument in our defense. Each time he would admonish me with a grin and send me on my way without any serious punishment.

Nice that you had such a good relationship with the dean.
And what a racket that so few of your credit hours transferred.

Also on the first day the other Mike was kind of his friend telling him not to be so gullible and to act standoffish. That Mike was the Mike that took ME to the dance with him in the Ring. He took ME to that dance and he was wearing JB's old college cloths that JB had to take back because they needed money to buy a new cow after Chance died.

Nice that you had such a good relationship with the dean. And what a racket that so few of your credit hours transferred. Yes, he was a great dean. We had some one on one conversations in his office and he told me that he had gotten himself into some similar situations when he was a student. The university I went to was a private no-nonsense school and is not a party school. Most students take their studies very seriously and spend Friday and Saturday nights studying. For them fun was studying. Kind of like Kyle in The Genius episode fo the The Waltons. Thankfully, all my roommates were like me and preferred to have fun and blow off some steam on the weekends. We never committed any serious infractions but we did gain a reputation which put us under the microscope of the fun police. For one party we threw, we posted advertisements at a nearby all-female Catholic college. The head nun at that college was not happy and called our dean to complain. The dean called me in and told me we broke the rule against publicly advertising an on-campus party. He made us cancel that Friday night party. When I asked if we could have an unadvertised party on Saturday, he said go for it. In regards to my lost credits, I do not fault the community college. I didn't know what I wanted to do so took a variety of classes with no focus. I entered their real estate program to become a realtor. Got my license but decided it was not for me. I entered their automotive program to become a mechanic and did that for almost two years. I enjoyed it but realized it was a nice hobby but not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So all those credits didn't transfer to a traditional 4 year university. Despite the loss of all those credits, I'm still an advocate for community colleges and believe they provide a great service. For relatively inexpensive tuition, they provide a good education for someone looking for a two year degree. It is also a great way for a young person who knows what they want to do to get their core classes out of the way in a focused curriculum and then transfer to a four year university with almost all their credits transferring. For an unfocused student like myself, it is also a good way to take a variety of classes to find what they are good at and what they like.

I disliked Mary Ellen in the early seasons and in The Homecoming. And if you get right down to it, she really did David dirty. Jilting him at the alter (of the wedding rehearsal, wasn't it). I realize they were probably looking for a dynamic like Zeb and Esther had with Curt and Mary Ellen, but still. Mary Ellen -- I generally like the character. However, I too couldn't believe how she treated David at the wedding rehearsal -- so disrespectful. When a man gives you an engagement ring, it symbolizes his love and lifetime commitment to you. Remember when Mary Ellen threw the ring onto the ground? She could have placed it in David's cardigan pocket or in his hands. What is it with Mary Ellen and rings? If I had to choose a least favorite character, maybe Cousin Rose. Terrific actress. Kind character. However, when she arrived and became the mother figure in the household, the show seemed to lose a lot of its original dynamics and flavor. That's when the show started to jump the shark, in my opinion.

Who was the old woman who couldn't get it into her thick head that she couldn't get her usual amount of sugar at Ike's because of the war rationing?
Was that Maud Gormley?
If so, I found her annoying.

Watching 'The Faun' as I type, I've remembers just what a name-that-would-get-me-banned Graham Foster was. It makes me grateful that he was a one-off character.

If so, I found her annoying. Don’t forget when she was charging all kinds of goods at Godsey’s when Jason was running the store, even though she knew she couldn’t pay. Selfish.

I always thought the Baldwin sisters were downright silly. Imagine, never having children (nor even a pet - maybe a parakeet?).. They must have been SO bored....neither sister (in all likelihood) having any paying job in their entire lives (other than making moonshine).. living entirely off their inheritance...and never moving from the house where (I suppose) they were born.
In one episode, John-Boy mentioned going to Richmond, and one of the sisters said "Oh, we haven't been to Richmond in 30 years" - and yet it's only 3 hours away - well, maybe a little longer, back then. And I can't remember if they ever owned or drove a car? I'm not sure. (Please, correct me if I'm wrong). I know, in one episode they seemed helpless controlling a car that kept endlessly going in circles in front of the Godsey's store.
And despite living in the same house their entire lives, and having little else to do, they never once took time to look behind the giant framed portrait on the wall and find Ashley Longworth's letter, saying to look inside a hollow tree. And they never once in their lives - with little else to do -, had taken the time to read their father's diary or notebook in the attic about him having helped an injured Yankee soldier. It took a stranger (the traveling WPA writer) to notice and examine it.

Especially back in the "old days" (prior to the 1950s give or take).

alfresco , The Baldwin sisters did own a car. Remember in The Homecoming, John Boy and Hawthorne went to their house to borrow some gas. When one of the sisters asked the other where they keep the gas, the other replied, “In the car, you ninny,” or something like that. Edited: I did a little research. The Baldwin sisters’ car was a 1925 Studebaker.
