Corabeth intimates some explanation during the episode where mamie and Emily find the secret room in the house. But what’s the big secret supposed to be?
Maybe that Judge Baldwin did secret “dirty” or low-key/illegit jobs and favors for higher-ups in govt? Like he was part of an underground-ish favor economy in old Virginia/D.C.?
There are many different ones like the “cousin” from Austria during the war, the woman who helps with their wills who worked for the govt... but yeah I’m just wondering if there’s a more specific explanation for what all that is. Thanks

I believe there was quite a specific answer to this.... can't remember which episode (probably soon thereafter?) -- possibly the one in which Erin is writing about the ladies and discovers something in the Judge's writings ??
Was he considered a traitor for some reason ?? .... Someone must know.... please.

It was explained in The Boondoggle S4 Ep5 The sisters let Mr. Sims go through their papa’s private letters and important papers. He discovers that during the war between the States that the Baldwin’s father allowed Union soldiers to stay in the Baldwin home and was then accused of treason. The news comes as a shock to the sisters and Miss Mamie who had become a bit fond of Mr. Sims takes it especially hard and locks herself away in her bedroom. John-Boy then learns that Grandpa knew about the charges all along and had tried to prevent its discovery. He confirms that the war ended before a trial could take place. www.allaboutthewaltons.com/ep-s4/s04-05.php

I remember The Boondoggle yes but that doesn’t quite answer the question... that one was just about the judge allowing the home to be used to house both sides’ injured in the civil war after a battle. He was never cleared bc the war ended (confederacy dissolved) before it went to trial but that guy helped finally settle it. Doesn’t quite explain what the business with all the different so-called “cousins” was...

Wasn't there 2 different episodes where older male relatives of theirs tried to swindle them using the Recipe as the catalyst. I know one of them was when the meteorite hit their recipe room. Their cousin tried to make them think it was the hand of God sent to smash the still.
Also wasn't Rev. Fordwick distantly related to them?

Yeah I recall, they tried saying they heard the voice of judge Baldwin and he told them to take it away or something. Maybe if it says more about their background in that episode we could have some more insight
