I'm not sure if this is the correct section, but I was wondering something. A few times on this board I have read where someone would say if there was ever another Walton production, that they would like to see maybe the early days of Zeb and Esther, John and Olivia, etc.
So my question, hypothetically speaking if you were the casting director who would you cast to play the parts of the younger versions of these characters.

This is a difficult one, how young should they be? John and Olivia the same age as John-Boy and Mary Ellen or even as young as Jim-Bob and Elizabeth. Anyway here's my choice, I've added a few extra characters to goodnight's original four. You'll notice I've added John's brother Ben who would have been alive at the time. It's been a challenge trying to think of who would be most suitable.

Unfortunately I do not know enough about today's younger actors to make a call on that. Sorry. Living outside of the English speaking world does not help either!

Well I still live in the states and I'm pretty sure I can't name any actors who first became famous after about 1998. And I'm good with that! Lol

Please accept my apologies for some of the off topic nature of this post, as well as it's length, but more importantly to goodnight. The main reason why this post is as it is, can be found in the first paragraph after the quotes from previous postings. SpoilersUnfortunately I do not know enough about today's younger actors to make a call on that. Sorry. Living outside of the English speaking world does not help either! Well I still live in the states and I'm pretty sure I can't name any actors who first became famous after about 1998. And I'm good with that! Lol When I watched The Waltons for the first time, I'd never heard of any of the cast members, especially the children. It does help to have some background to child acting as I've taken a particular interest in coming of age movies and others featuring young actors. Which was of enormous help in finding actors to play the younger lives of Zeb, Esther, John and Olivia. It took me sometime to put that post together, a whole afternoon if I'm honest, until I finally whittled it down to who I thought would be ideal to play the younger lives of Zeb, Esther, John and Olivia, not forgetting Ben who would then have been alive. Then I got to thinking who else would I have cast to play the younger versions of Ike Godsey and Ep Bridges et al. Here are some films from my list of over a hundred plus movies featuring young actors. which I hope will give you some idea of their acting ability. Stand By Me (Will Wheaton, River Phoenix, Cory Feldman and Jerry O'Connell [Ike Godesy]) If you haven't seen the movie Gordi Lechance (Wheaton) is SBM's equivalent to John-Boy in that he becomes a writer. The film even begins and ends with a narration similar to that done by Earl in The Waltons. In an episode of The Waltons I think its either Jim-Bob or Ben says "crying's sissy," watch River in these two scenes as Chris in Stand By Me and as Philip in Surviving: A Family In Crisis .
Ironically River did die from an overdose in 1993 what a waste of a good actor. Here's Will Wheaton crying in Stand By Me Ethan Hawke on Explorers (with River Phoenix and Jason Presson). Ethan's mother was against him appearing in the movie, as she didn't want him to go into the industry. If he hadn't we'd have lost a fine actor. It's a bit like John Sr being against Jason going to The Conservatory to study music. Ethan was another one that I considered to play John. Ethan Hawke on Explorers Like Knowing (see below) the film was a flop. Boyhood (Ethan Hawke and Ellar Coltrane) How much Boyhood and The Waltons are so much alike, in that we watch the same characters grow from a boy in the case of Mason in Boyhood and the children in The Waltons. From Time to Time (Alex Etel), Secondhand Lions (Joel Hayley Osment) Deep Impact (Elijah Wood, Denise Crosby [Esther]) Super 8 (Joel Courtney [John], Elle Fanning [Olivia] and Ryan Lee [Ep Bridges]) It was seeing that picture of Joel and Jake Watkins as they appeared in Tom Sawyer that I'd found my actor to play John for a couple of reasons. Both boys look just how a Walton boy would have looked, especially with them being barefooted. How many times did you see the Walton children with bare feet? The one character that goodnight didn't mention was Ben as he would have been alive until he and John went off to fight in the war. Knowing Chandler Canterbury and Lara Robinson. When I was working on my post, I had thought of these two to play a very young John and Olivia. This gut-wrenching scene from Knowing is a good example of Chandler's fine acting.

I'm in the same boat, although I live in the U.S.-- except for Stand By Me and Dead Poets... both great examples.... If you truly haven't seen either of these, you must make the effort -- perhaps next time you're "home" you can drag some more DVDs back with you .

Well, yes, I have seen those flics and enjoyed them very much. But none of those young actors are young anymore. So I still can't help make suggestions for current young actors who can play the Walton adults as young people. SORRY!!!

I took a retrospective look when making my selection as goodnight didn't stipulate a time period in which the prequel will be filmed. So you don't necessarily need to use current actors. This is a hypothetical situation one in which we use our imagination.

To some of the younger members of the forum, I suppose we are "oldies" but "goodies."

After all Jerry O'Connell no longer looks like the chubby little boy he was in Stand By Me. Thank you for your suggestions.

Thank you for your suggestions. Wow -- never realized that was Jerry O'Connell.... Also -- regarding Kip Niven, who I think is mentioned somewhere in these postings (or, maybe somewhere else today!) -- I have always "wished" that he were related to David Niven !! -- but, no, can't find any "evidence" of that...

Now you've done it JeriJet, where you say that you wish Kip Niven had been related to David Niven started me thinking. I did a Google search David Niven-Kip Niven to see if you might have missed something, but drew a blank. I then went to David Niven's entry in IMDB and read his biography. As I was reading it a thought came into my mind, in as much as David Niven could (in my opinion) have been a member of the Rat Pack. After all wasn't Peter Lawford a British actor. This is where I found something I never knew in that Lawford was President John F. Kennedy's brother-in-law. I'm now going into my Walter Mitty mode. Here's a thought. How about David Niven playing the part of Bennett Holmby in The Runaway, remember the hotel scene where Bennett shows John-Boy and Jim-Bob his suitcase with labels of all the places he visited. Why David Niven, wasn't he in Around the World in 80 Days. Another role for him would have been as A. J. Covington in The Writer, why him? Among other things Niven was a novelist. Back to reality.

I did a Google search David Niven-Kip Niven to see if you might have missed something, but drew a blank. Oh, ye of little faith.... I then went to David Niven's entry in IMDB and read his biography. As I was reading it a thought came into my mind, in as much as David Niven could (in my opinion) have been a member of the Rat Pack. Ageed... After all wasn't Peter Lawford a British actor. This is where I found something I never knew in that Lawford was President John F. Kennedy's brother-in-law. I bet you knew that at some early point but have forgotten -- it was splashed about in the news frequently.... oops, you were probably too young at the time.....I'm now going into my Walter Mitty mode. Perfect ! Another role for him would have been as A. J. Covington in The Writer, why him? Among other things Niven was a novelist. Okay, that's enough, now. . Back to reality. Try to enjoy it !
