I was wondering, after John-boy went to live in NY in the story, what became of the Chronicle & his press? I've watched Ben & Jason clean and oil the press after John-boy left and also noticed pages of the Chronicle on the wall inside the shed when Jim-bob took refuge in there.. I thought John-boy was still paying off his press with proceeds from publishing his newspaper. I don't recall him paying it off before leaving. Any insight into my questions are appreciated?

I trust you're not losing any sleep over this pondering.... there are many, many unanswered questions concerning the show, even those having to do with chronology. I don't believe the writers/producers ever thought the show would be so closely scrutinized.

I wonder is there an easy way to find those questions (threads) here on the forum?:

I assumed it went under, since Johnboy moved to New York. Did you notice that he never graduated from Boatwright either? They never addressed the fact that he dropped out of college.

In real life Earl Hamner had to leave college in his sophomore year when he was drafted into the Army during WWII. He went back to college after the war and graduated. Since John Boy is Earl's TV counterpart we have to presume it was the same for him.

That's a big oversight for the writers seeing how much of a sacrifice it was for the family to send their children to college. And also how proud John-boy was to be able to go to Boatwright.

I think John-Boy's work on "Stars and Stripes" got his writing career started, and thus he never felt the need for further education.... a similar thing happened with my father, and I assume many others. Doing military service during wartime can change one's priorities in major ways. And, then, there was Janet !! I don't believe it was an "oversight" -- If the many, many writers and producers felt compelled to follow though on each and every plot situation, the show might have gone on for decades !!

I agree that the writers couldn’t follow up on every plot thread, but in this case, John Boy’s college education was a significant recurring thread during the show. And I believe that the producers knew during early on the fifth season that Richard Thomas was leaving; I thought that was the impetus behind “The Best Christmas”, where Olivia feels it will be their last Christmas all together.
They could have sped up the timeline by a year (which they eventually did anyway) and had him graduate. At the very least, I think they should have mentioned him leaving college in “The Achievement”, which was otherwise a pitch-perfect episode.

To me, it would have made no sense plot-wise for John-Boy to go back to college -- he had already seen so much, done so much, and wanted to chase his budding career. Going back to school would have slowed down that progress, and wasn't at all necessary.
Regarding Richard, from the very beginning, all knew that he had committed only to his five-year contract. I think he was quite wise to sign up for only five years, avoiding being forever identified mainly with The Waltons -- the other "children" had not done so and and had little or no future acting success.

Agreed with most of that. I just wish they had mentioned him leaving college in “The Achievement” and explain why he felt it was the right thing for him to do. Odd that his parents didn’t bring it up.
I’ve heard Richard say in recent years that since he wound up typecast anyway, he wished he had stayed with the show for its entire run. I’d argue that Richard has had more success than the other Walton children because he is the best actor among them (it didn’t hurt that he looks the most “Hollywood” of the bunch).

For me Richard Thomas will always be John Boy, I have seen glimpses of him in other films but it just doesn't feel right some how, sorry😕.
I seem to recall in an interview he said that 'Goodnight John Boy' would probably be on his grave stone? 🌸

Just to muddy up the waters here a little bit --- because I'm not totally sure about John Boy's college accomplishment either. A thought ----- Remembering the episode concerning John Boy trying for the television teaching job, how could he even apply for a professorship at Boatwright without a degree?

No matter what projects he did since then, it just didn't feel right. He was already type-cast in my mind.
