What a disappointment for John and Olivia to finally be out of debt and then only minutes later opting to help Ike and Corabeth out of a jam when Ike makes an unwise refrigerator purchase. I recall Mom and Dad finally paying off the house in the 80s, and seeing Mom with that big smile on her face.
I never laughed so hard during a Waltons episode as I did during the celebration scene. They had just burned the mortgage paper and Jason was playing his guitar. Then Ike and Corabeth came and broke the bad news to John about possibly losing the store. Naturally, it was an upsetting moment there on the porch, only mere seconds after they burnt the mortgage paper. They rushed inside to talk about it and Olivia hurriedly told Jason to keep playing. Jason cheerfully began singing Buffalo Girls, the other kids looking at him dumbfounded. Despite the sad news, I could not help but laugh at this oddly hilarious moment.
This sort of reminds me of the house I grew up in. We had a bat infestation problem. My grandma took out a loan to pay for a full fumigation. Like they covered the house with plastic and set off the stuff that would kill them. But I guess we missed one of the holes they were getting in. And we saw our first bat in the house in months on the very day she payed off the loan.
