I watched this episode last night, and I have a few thoughts. First of all, I like the scene where John and John-Boy are checking out the Guthrie Mine and Sheriff Bridges comes and finds them. I love it when Sheriff Bridges says, "Well, by golly, I get to arrest the whole family." And I also like it when he says, "So what are you boys doing here besides trespassing?" I think that Erin should not have kept her second job a secret. It was nothing to be ashamed of. She was just being sort of like a nanny to the doctor's two children. It wasn't like she was secretly seeing the doctor. I felt like Erin was a little messed up in this episode. When Corabeth blamed John-Boy for what happened at the mine and told him he never should have come home, I thought that Olivia should have gone up to her and given her a swift kick in the britches. The amount of time it took to get the men out of the mine was almost equivalent to the amount of time it took for the Titanic to sink. Sitting through that whole scene at the mine was like sitting through the sinking scene in Titanic. Getting back to the first scene at the mine, I think it showed what a good friend Sheriff Bridges was to the Walton family. I don't know why, but I liked seeing him walking between John and John-Boy, two of his favorite men. I also liked how Sheriff Bridges was a true friend and confidant to John-Boy during the disaster at the mine.
I could never figure out why Erin was so secretive. I thought that storyline was stupid. The whole time, I was wondering if I missed something, because they made her act like she was doing something horrible. All this build up, and it was all innocent.
I just watched this episode again today, and I have to agree with both of you about Erin's second job. I don't understand why she was so secretive, and I don't understand why Olivia was so upset about it. It was a perfectly respectable job, babysitting for a widower's children while he was away working.
My heart broke a little when Richard left the show so this is one of my favorites. Always makes me cry. I love how Corabeth showed us so many more layers. I always think it's lucky that the pick ax didn't hit Daddy in the back of the head when they were finally found.
Erin, was very secretive about her second job. All she was doing was being a nanny to the children. I think, the reason Olivia got upset. Was Erin, didn't tell her about the job. It was very close, when the ax pick was next to John. When they're were breaking the rock apart. I like the apart, when John Boy rescue Elizabeth.
Once again, I'm about to get myself in hot water here. OK --- my take on why Erin kept her little side job to herself even though it was all above board. She was hiding it from her mama. Erin was well aware of the Southern Baptist view of the way the world should turn and the wrath it can bring when you step out of the perceived line. (softball games not included)
Now ---- Corabeth --- she showed her true colors in this episode. Everything in the world is all about her. I think this is why she is not a favorite character to a lot of good folks.
