I never watched the show during the 70s. One day, I think about 2011 or 2012, I saw it on INSP. Then I saw Ralph Waite - no kidding - I kept tuning in just to see those blue eyes. I wasn't viewing him as a Daddy figure either! OK..Um...Uncle? Grandfather? Cousin? Nephew? Long lost brother? (Think Frank...think!) Blue Eyes...Ralph Waite's got...Blue Eyes.

My Papa (grandfather) was a fan and that's what got me into the show. He would talk about his childhood and growing up during the Great Depression and how it compared to the Waltons. Even though it was hard I think he would've gone back to those "simpler" days in a heartbeat.

I wasn't viewing him as a Daddy figure either! Me too. Sadly, I was "too cool for school" in the 70s and The Waltons was not cool. I'm sure I mentioned this elsewhere but, what really hooked me on the show was the pace of the show. I have an almost physical revulsion to the short attention span fare so prevalent today. On today's shows, how often do you see someone casually walk up to the house, say hi to everybody, walk into the house, and ask, "Where is [fill in the blank]?" It happened all the time in the Walton world.

Started watching when I was in grade school in the 70's. I think it was the stories and the history that got me. And JohnBoy

I watched the show from the beginning. I was a passionate viewer and fought to see it instead of "Welcome Back, Kotter," which my older siblings wanted to watch. Then I watched the second half hour. It is interesting to me that "Kotter" is mainly forgotten and "The Waltons" continues to be enjoyed today by so many. I guess I am getting my "revenge". HA!
I also took my lunch to school in my Waltons' lunchbox in sixth grade, which definitely was "not cool," but as a dedicated fan, I really did not care.
I liked the family closeness and also the spiritual aspect of the show, which was not so prevalent in other shows of the day and even less so now.

But John Travolta just couldn't be resisted at the time. What's a poor, hormonal teenage girl to do???

I just started watching The Waltons in 2014, so I didn't grow up with the show. I like the simplicity of it. Life now is so complicated. Technology, while good in a lot of ways, is making us so disconnected with one another. There's so much choice, we can go on Amazon and have the choice of millions of goods to be delivered to our door. Nothing like going to Ike Godsey's country store and buying just necessities and engaging in some friendly talk with the other customers. The wood, the beautiful, dark wood. That's when things were made with quality. We're so used to cheap plastic, we've forgotten how beautiful real wood is. When I see scenes of Boatwright University, I love looking at the wooden desks, wooden file cabinets. Whenever I get tired of my over-scheduled, over-complicated, too-many-choices, too techy life, I turn on the Waltons. You captured my thoughts exactly. I loved the Waltons when I was a child loving the farm life and such but as an adult I can escape from those things mothergoose points out.

I came into the game late. I was born in 77 but somehow never saw the show as a child. Then in my early 30s I came across "The Genius" on GMC and laid eyes on John-Boy and it was all over but the crying. Hook, line and sinker. Months later I found myself in Burbank for the 40th anniversary celebration having one of the best weekends of my life :-)

I had begun watching The Walton's on the Hallmark Channel back in 2006 & 2007. I remember as first seeing it as a child in the early mid 1990s with my grandparents on TNN (The Nashville Network). I remember the early opening credits and seeing this fellow whose name was Richard Thomas but was John-Boy on the show and how sort of smitten I was and how he had his own room (as did I) and he had a desk by the window facing the driveway (as did I) but I was not the eldest in my family I am an only child but loved the premise of the closeness of the family as I still do but as you may know by now I didn't want to be a Walton sister but wanted to be one of John-Boy`s girlfriends. Oh who am I kidding. I still want to be Janet!. I didn't know who Janet was until after I had watched the movies which has been in these recent years. I didn't watch the show back then as little girl but was reintroduced to the show on the Hallmark Channel. I'm glad they released the show & movies on DVD.
Just thought I would share my story. I'm glad that this board exists!
