My Pappaw was born in 1882. When he was a young boy, the family bought a pump organ. My Pappaw was very musical, and he sat down and started playing hymns on the organ. He never had a lesson. He just played by ear. They bought another organ for the church, and my Pappaw was the church organist. After my grandparents died, one of my aunts inherited the organ. She had it shipped to her home in Arizona. When my aunt died, my sister contacted her sons about the organ. Neither of them was interested in keeping it, so she had it shipped back to West Virginia (very expensive!). It is now in her house. Here is a picture I took of it a few years ago. That's my sweet Mama standing next to it. She's in Heaven with my grandparents now. What a sweet photo of your mother! The organ is a beautiful piece. I hope the shipping company did a good job for your sister. How special it is to have such lovely family heirlooms. I wish I had something from my ancestors. All I can do is save things my mother gave me to pass on to my son and hope he (or his future wife) don't get rid of them.

I just realized, I actually posted about the bed and the organ in the 1930s kitchen thread. Anyway, here is the picture of the bed. It's over 100 years old. I found the pic in my mother's photo album. My daughter has the bed now, but it is in her garage. She doesn't have room to set it up in her house. Maybe when her kids grow up, she can dedicate a room to it or something. The bed is not a standard size. It's smaller than a double bed but larger than a twin. My aunt used to work at a mattress factory, and she had a mattress specially made for the bed. The bed was made by my great grandfather who fought in the Civil War. His name was Adam Fraley and he was born in 1840 and died in 1921. I am including a picture of him as well. I don't know how old he was in this picture. My guess is, pretty old!
That bed is gorgeous and a real family heirloom. I hope your daughter is making sure that the bed isn't getting nicked up. Sometimes when wood furniture is exposed to heat and cold (like it is in the garage) it isn't good for it. Makes cracks in the wood, joints get loose, etc. If she has the special made mattress in the garage too, she better keep a good eye on it. Mice, spiders and other insects and critters might take up residence in it.
It's a shame she doesn't have somewhere to put it inside now, even if it is propped upside a wall.
I will mention that to her about storing it inside the house somewhere. She talked about having a new mattress made for it, and was looking into how expensive that would be. I don't know what she found out.

That is a fairly good price for the radio. I have seen them for sale for $5000 to $8000! Would love to have it!

I had many items for many years (board game, Whitman hardcover books, Viewmaster, lunch kettle and thermos, original Christmas LP autographed by the cast), but when we moved to Ecuador in 2010, I needed to purge myself of many beloved items. I kept my autograph collection, but most everything else had to go. Oh, and I have the DVDs, so I can indulge; no Waltons on cable here in South America.

Wish you could have kept the Walton things but you are doing great things for so many people where you are.

Yes, having moved around so much, I have to keep in mind not to cling to things of this world. My wife is better at doing that, though. I tend to hold on more. I suppose it's a process.

Got thinking about what else I would like. I think the Hoosier cabinet would be nice. I would love to run an old General Store like Ike's. It would be fun to be the hub of a small town.

I would have a hard time giving up some of my favorite things. I don't like clutter but some things (like butter churns) I want to keep!

My grandparents on my mother's side had a small store in a small town. We spent a lot of time there. I remember it well. Mark was raised above a general store (later bike shop when times started to change) that his father built and operated.

Oh Kathy Lee I would love to see pictures of those stores![/font] My grandparents had those little squeeze things for grabbing things off the top shelf. I used to play with them all the time and move things around. The store was small like Ike's and my grandparents lived behind and above the store. When my brother and I stayed over our grandparents, we were allowed to go into the store after supper and pice any two things for dessert!!!! My brother and I would debate forever before we decided. A candy bar and an ice cream? A Tastecake and a cookie? Hard decisions! I remember my grandparents slicing lunchmeat, grinding ground beef, cutting beef cubes, etc. for customers. Sometimes I would help stock shelves, dust, or mop the floors. My grandmother made the best cheesesteaks from fresh sliced beef. So good! I have pictures of the grocery store somewhere. The building is still there. The place where my husband's family's store is still there. We have pictures of that store also. That store was a variety store that sold everything from records to toys. But no food. Then when times changed and bigger stores came into the area, the store changed to a bike shop.

I know Walton fans can get a little crazy with our love of all things Walton (which, by the way, I think is perfectly normal. ). So, I wanted to ask....what did you buy because...... That is just like what they had on the Waltons!!!! I was at an antique store a few weeks ago, and on a bottom shelf there was......a kitchen towel rack from the 1930s! Better then striking gold! I bought it and it is now in my kitchen. Every time I hang a towel on it, I think..........So nice! Just like the Waltons! Show us a picture of it! I have the Waltons drinking glasses.

I post a picture. Maybe tomorrow. I will probably be upside down. All the pictures I post are upside down for some reason!
