It seems that every episode of The Waltons I've seen has at least one scene of the family at the dinner table. Was there ever an episode where the family was not at the table for some meal?
Also, those kids worked hard! Until they grew up and moved away, it seems like every kid is in every episode. I'm sure it was made to be "fun" work by the directors, but still a job being a child actor.

I'm sure it was made to be "fun" work by the directors, but still a job being a child actor. Sure, the family enjoyed several meals outside rather than at the dinner table. They had a picnic dinner outside by the pond in The Heritage where they discussed what they'd all do if they had a lot of money. This was when John had an offer to sell the house and mountain to a developer. They also had a picnic lunch in The Rebellion which was when Olivia famously got the permanent wave in her hair and it went wrong. They ate a breakfast outside when the house burned down in the fire. Mary Beth McDonagh wrote in her book what life was like on the Walton's set for the child actors. They certainly worked hard but were also subject to strict child labour laws - they could only work a set number of hours a day and had to spend a certain amount of time with a teacher in a special classroom on set for their school work. They each had a chaperone, be it a parent or allocated carer. Mary Beth had a chaperone from the age of 11 to 16 who she claimed was very protective of her on set.

Being a child actor was harder then I thought. What was especially hard was that she was tutored on the set and then dropped back into regular school every spring. Can you imagine that! Scary hard for a teenager.

Scary hard for a teenager. Yes indeed. Mary Beth told how she struggled with this lifestyle too. At a time when you want to fit in with your peers it is hard to be in any way different from them - as she would have been.

I'm thinking mostly of David and Kami, they were very young in the beginning and it seemed like they were in every single episode. On Little House, it seems like the "time off" was more generous. Mellisa Gilbert would have an episode off, of just make a small appearance. The Greenbush twins would not be in an episode. Mellisa Sue Anderson would have an episode off.
The Waltons kids worked hard though, fron youngest to oldest.
And Kelvin, you're the keeper of the dinner table, congratulations!
I would love a big oak farm table in my place.

I have a farm house table in my dining room and two long benches. The man who made the table did not want to make benches because he said they were not comfortable. But I told him that is what I wanted. I am glad I did not change my mind. I love them! They are very wide benches and look so nice with the table.

Reminds me of Paul Michael Glaser speaking about when he made a guest appearance on the show in The Airmail Man and he was sitting in makeup before a scene in the chair beside Kami. Kami was looking at a newspaper and he asked this little girl what she was reading and he saw that she was reading the financial pages and checking the price of her shares

Kathy Lee - I love your table and benches. The benches were very comfortable to me. I would love to have benches instead of chairs at my table. It would work a lot better with my foreverettes. They have to squeeze by each other into their chair plus they are always knocking each other's chair on the sides.

That is why we did not get chairs. There is just not enough room. And the benches are rather cozy. The table also has two extensions that slide into each end. Plus, the benches make great balancing beams for the grandchildren!

Made eight pies for the reunion weekend. Only half a pie left. Having a great weekend with Walton friends. Time to go home today! Wish we had more time.
