I think that was a dumb question when Olivia was asking John-Boy was he smoking cigarettes inside his bedroom. I would think if he did, she would have notice a smoke filled room and can smell it. But another thing I am wondering, when Charlie Snead dropped by the house to give them that turkey, did Olivia knew that Charlie was stealing turkeys and ham?
I agree about the cigarette smoke, unless someone else in the house was a smoker and the house already reeked of cigarette smoke. I guess she was just trying to think of something he might be doing that he would want to hide.
I have wondered the same thing about the turkeys and hams. She insists they "do not accept charity in this house" then accepts a turkey from Charlie Snead, an inconsistency which John Boy points out to her. Accepting a stolen turkey is much worse than just accepting charity. I think deep down she knew it, but she didn't want to believe it, so she convinced herself he got it legitimately. "Milk the cow, John Boy."
Also John wasn't there to get them a turkey or any kind of meat and Olivia knew she had put something on the table besides her applesauce cake or the family wouldn't have a Christmas meal so she swallowed her pride and accepted the turkey
