Bonanza is my all-time favorite TV show. Yes, even better than The Waltons! Sorry!
But during it's run, it seemed that everyone who was anyone visited The Ponderosa!
Zsa Zsa Gabor John Ireland James MacArthur Burgess Meredith Leslie Nielsen James Whitmore Louis Gossett Jr. Yvonne De Carlo Ida Lupino Jack Lord Ricardo Montalban Robert Culp Martin Landau Lee Marvin Robert Vaughn Jonathan Harris Carroll O'Connor Stefanie Powers Andrew Duggan (The Homecoming) Dennis Hopper Marlo Thomas Cesar Romero
I could go on and on! Now a lot of you youngsters may not recognize many of these names, but for us senior citizens, these were some major TV and movie stars from the 50s and 60s.

Yes, a lot of people passed through the Ponderosa during its long run, including another "Walton" actor, David Doremus (GW), who told me that his appearance included an onscreen fight which became almost too real.

I always preferred Bonanza (and Big Valley) to the more popular Gunsmoke, because Bonanza and Big Valley were more modern in their settings and themes, while Gunsmoke was essentially a pure Western. You look at the interiors of the houses on Bonanza and Big Valley, and they look practically like today's houses, while Gunsmoke interiors seem like shacks. I also like how Bonanza and Big Valley deal with more modern themes, like business and land and contracts. Again, in Gunsmoke, the themes are what you would find in a pure Western. Not that Gunsmoke isn't a good show in it's own right, of course.

I live very close to where the inspiration for the Barkley family lived. I also live very close to Stockton and San Francisco. The BV is the bomb diggity. If I had to marry someone, it would be Nick Barkley.

I wasn't alive during Bonanza but I recognize the majority of the actors you listed.

It seems like in Bonza they used older actors to play younger people. Maybe that was the thing in that era, but I remember being a kid and it seemed someone who is supposed to be a few years older than me was lots of years older than me.

Most of the people in Gunsmoke were dirt poor to middle class. While they were both set in roughly the same time period, Gunsmoke was probably more true to the time period in that regard.

A few weeks ago on the Inspiration Channel there was a Bonanza movie from the nineties, none of the original cast was on it.Michael Landon Jr.played Little Joe son, they explained that Little Joe fought in The Spanish American War and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Little Joe had a daughter, but no daughters of Michael played Little Joe daughter.Hoss had an illegamite son,but he was not played by Dan Blocker son, Dan son was in the movie,Someone played Adam son,but they were estranged. The plot was someone wanted to buy The Ponderosa,at the end it turned out good.Does anyone remembering watching the movie in the nineties?I remember watching a Bonanza movie back than but I don't know if it was that movie, or if another Bonanza movie was made. The movie was real good.

Ive only seen those shows when I visited mu parents while my daddy was still alive, but the Cartwright family was filthy rich. I thought it strange that the mom took in her husband's son by a mistress IF I remember correctly. I mean no offense if I am wrong. 😎
