What is the one thing that you wish most had happened during The Waltons run that didn't ever happen?
I fervently wish that Ashley Longworth, Sr. had returned to Miss Emily. To carry such a love for so many years... *Sigh*

I often wonder what would have changed if Ellen had not had her stroke, and Will had not passed away. Granted, the viewers were given the gift of seeing Grandma Walton come home and twirl with her "Old Fool" once more, but it definitely was not in the cards of how the story line was originally to play out. I posted this question about a year ago, and received a few responses. But, I definitely wish we had more time with Grandma and Grandpa Walton.

Of course they didn't know that the 9th season would be the last. But it would have been nice to have Olivia and John make an appearance in the last episode.

I wish the main characters who had to leave could have come back once in awhile. Richard did for 3 episodes, which was great. If only he could have done just 1 or 2 episodes a season. Same thing with Michael and Ralph, although Ralph left in the final season anyway. I agree that Miss Emily should have gotten her Ashley back. I also wish they had 1 or 2 more episodes with the farrier who adopted the boy and I wish Chad had stayed in Erin's life.

I would have liked it if Erin had married Hank Buchanan and that Mary Ellens first husband return from the war...only missing in action and that real Johnboy stayed in the series staying on the mountian to write his second novel and continue the paper....sigh...only in my imagination...

I'd change a few things. Many of them others have mentioned...Richard Thomas stays all the way, so do Ralph Waite and Michael Learned. I also wished Mary Ellen married anyone else but Curt David Spencer, I like Chad with Erin too.
One other thing I would change...I wish G.W. would have come back, alive. It was a sad moment when he died.

I too wish that Richard Thomas and Michael would have stayed on the show and that Ashley Longworth came back for Miss Emily. Also, I would have liked to see more historical events shown. They could have brought up things like the War of the Worlds panic, speculation about Amelia Earhart's fate, listened to Seabiscut's races on the radio.

I have thought that it would have made a great Halloween episode on The Waltons for them to have done the Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. Grandpa, Grandma, John and Olivia could have been at home listening to it while their children were at different friend's houses or out on dates. Ike and Corabeth listening to it while Aimee was out with friends too. Just show Walton's mountain in a panic, scrambling to find each other. It happened on October 30, 1938.

This is a little off topic, but it's about War of the Worlds. In the now cancelled show Cold Case, the homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman who died that night in 1938 (it's a VERY cold case). The older version of the woman's husband (who was the murderer by the way) in present day was played by Ralph Waite.
