I just heard there was another allegation made by another baby momma two years ago, where he claims to have tried to spank his son and the boy pulled away and hit his head. That's all I heard. David

I don't remember any reference to a switch. I do think John made a reference to spanking, and Rose begged him not to. This of course was before John knew about the abuse Jeffrey had experienced at the hands of his father. But I don't remember anything about a switch on The Waltons.

I also believe in the episode with Jeffrey who is misbehaving I think John tells him to go pick a switch off a tree. I could be wrong but I swear in one episode that was said, so if true we know they believed in spanking but like I said in the same episode they proved there is a difference between how they saw discipline and abuse. They were great parents and I was brought up the same way, it didn't happen often but when it did I'm sure I deserved it. A common thread in a lot of the posts of people spanked is most had a healthy fear of there fathers, and this is missing in my opinion from children's rearing today. Either because no father at home or parents who try to be their children's friends and not there parents. I never wanted to disappoint or let down my father, and at the same time I knew no matter what my momma loved me. David I just watched the entire episode where Jeffrey was misbehaving. There were 3 references to spanking, but nothing about a switch. The first time was near the beginning of the episode, when Jeffrey brought the family laying hen into the house. John said something like, "He may need a spanking yet." Then after Jeffrey and Serena drove Cindy's car, John gave them chores to do and told them that what he should do is turn them over his knee and spank them, and that's what he'd do if they were his own children. The last time was after Jeffrey set off the air raid siren. Ben said, "Who gets to spank him?" John didn't say anything about spanking, but he gave Jeffrey a job cutting the grass.

Thanks Brenda, like I said I wasn't sure, maybe it was Andy Griffith show my other favorite show. I just know that one episode explained a lot in answering the question about spanking but still showing John was a good father. David

An apology if the following has already been discussed but, I remember two instances where Walton kids were in fear of getting spanked: one was Jim-Bob and Elizabeth in The Calf and the other was Ben and Jim-Bob in The Ordeal. As for my experience, in my family it was always Mom that did the "spanking." The reason I put that term in quotes is I'm not sure her implementation of the procedure rises to the level of the word spank. She rarely did it and it was always with a wooden spoon. It was usually applied when my brother and I were hanging around her and not doing "anything useful." I certainly never considered it abuse. I don't know about Olivia but, I could sure picture grandma giving John or "Uncle Ben" a whack or two.

Most of the talk we're hearing today (especially because of recent incidents in the NFL) on tv and radio sounds to me more like people's insistence on appearing politically correct, when it's mostly phoney outrage.... Of course it's a serious subject, but the media goes over the top in their constant coverage... like they think we never heard of any kind of domestic or child abuse before.... they should cover each story a bit, then drop it and go on to the next thing.... I like to be kept well informed, but it's getting so that I don't want to turn the news on.... they bombard us with one subject and ignore other important topics.... We all know it's not really "what used to be news" anymore, the question is "What is it?!" ... we need something else to call it !!

I think it's sad that people have to react with such outrage before the NFL decides that taking these players off the team (temporarily) is warranted. No one should get away with abuse, no matter how many touchdowns and tackles they get.

Oliva never laid a hand on the children, she sat them down and they had to learn Bible verses. Now John....I don't think he did it often, but I'll bet he took the boys out to the wood shed once in a while just so they knew it was an option. I got a swat on occasion from my Dad, always for sassing Mom. And I deserved it. My Wife's Mom would tell the kids "wait till your father gets home!" He would take them to another room to do the deed, then wouldn't have the heart to do it, but he got his point across.
