This is a great question. I'm going to review the episode guide and try to come up with a list. It will be interesting to see what everyone considers the top episodes.

I will not include the season 6 episodes before Richard came back for the guest appearances. If I had, this list would look quite different, because I think Season 6 was pretty great. I will, however, include Grandma Comes Home since it happens after Richard's last appearance.
1. Grandma Comes Home 2. The Attack 3. The Empty Nest 3a. The Outsider 4. The Inspiration 5. The Gold Watch 6. The Kinfolk 7. The Boosters 8. The Beau 9. The Outrage 10. The Legacy
Edited: Added the Outsider at "3a" because I couldn't read my handwriting the first time I reviewed the list of episodes I wrote down.

I wouldn't have known them either, if I hadn't been using another website to help give me ideas for my list.

Personally, I can live without The Baldwin episodes during those last years.
and the Rose episodes-although, Richard Schallert is favorite. He has been on every tv show of all time..
don't really like the Cora Beth episodes
hate most of the war episodes- unless there is fighting and machine guns
hate most of the Erin episodes those years
some of the Elizabeth-Drew episodes were alright
didn't really like Jeffery and Selena
hate almost all of the new John Boy episodes
hate most of the cindy episodes-but I like her character .
hate toni
a lot of the Mary Ellen episodes stink
almost all the jim-bob episodes are good. I like when he falls in love with the hot married lady and the episode where he falls for the NUN.

The original 1-5 seasons were The Waltons.Seasons 6-9 was The Walton kids grow up. I loved both.

Here's my favorite eleven. I have ranked them in the order that they aired, not in order of how much I like them:
1. The Stray (Season 6 Ep. 2) The Walton's find a runaway named Josh in their barn. Harley and Verdie adopt him.
2. The First Casulty (Season 6 Ep. 8) G.W. gets killed in a training accident. Yancy Tucker gets married.
3. The Children's Carol (Season 6 Ep. 12) Two English children (Tess and Pip) come to stay with the Baldwin Sisters but end up staying with the Waltons. Verdie sells her cinnamon cakes to earn money to buy the less fortunate children Christmas presents.
4. The Festival (Season 6 Ep. 16) Jason and Josh (Verdie & Harley's son) want to put on a concert together but Josh is discriminated against because of his race.
5. The Family Tree (Season 6 Ep. 18) Verdie finds a 'medallion' in her late father's things. She goes in search of her roots.
6. Grandma Comes Home (Season 6 Ep. 22) Grandma finally comes home from the hospital. Sadly, this is the last episode with Grandpa (Will Geer).
7. The Illusion (Season 7 Ep. 8) Verdie's college graduate daughter Esther, comes home disillusioned.
8. Day of Infamy (Season 7 Ep. 10) Pearl Harbor is attacked. Mary Ellen waits to hear about Curt's fate and Verdie waits to hear about her son, Jodie.
9. The Spirit (Season 8 Ep. 12) At Christmas, Jeffrey befriends an escaped German POW.
10. The Unthinkable (Season 8 Ep. 14) One of Jason's war buddies, Ted Lapinsky, tells about his grandfather's fate at the hands of the Nazis.
11. The Outrage (Season 9 Double Ep. 1 & 2) Verdie's husband Harley faces the prospect of prison when he's accused of a long-ago murder. John Walton Sr. tries to help Harley.
Did you notice that Lynn Hamilton (Verdie) is in seven of the above eleven episodes?

I've come up with a list of 10 episodes. They are in no particular order. I'm including a reason why each episode stands out for me.
1. The Family Tree: (Verdie searches for her roots.) I like this one because I have an interest in genealogy and my own family history.
2. Grandma Comes Home: I think Ellen Corby's return to the series after her stroke is one of the most courageous moments in television history.
3.The Empty Nest: The Walton family, the cast, and the viewers had an opportunity to say goodbye to Will Geer.
4. Day of Infamy: I like most of the episodes that center around a historical event, and I thought this one was very realistic. My favorite scene was at the end when Jim Bob came into the house and told Mary Ellen what was in the telegram.
5. The Outsider: Cindy is one of my favorite characters on The Waltons. I love the way she was introduced into the family.
6. The Homefront: Tommy Satterfield (much like G. W. Haines) was so young and innocent, and as his mother said, "he didn't even get to be in the war. It seems like such a waste."
7.The Unthinkable: Extermination camps! How can a human being be so cruel other human beings? "The Unthinkable" certainly is an appropriate title for this episode.
8. The Valediction: In a show of unity, the Walton brothers walk off together on their way to war.
9. The Outrage: (Harley is arrested for an old crime and John sees President Roosevelt for a pardon.) My favorite part of this episode was the end when the family went to Charlottesville early in the morning to pay their respects to the President as his funeral train went by. "Good-night, Mr. President."
10. The Pursuit: I iike any episode that features Jim Bob. He was always so natural in the part.
