Do you think the Waltons drank raw milk...straight from the cow, unaltered (pasteurized)? Just curious?

Do you think the Waltons drank raw milk...straight from the cow, unaltered (pasteurized)? Just curious? I say raw milk. You can drink it that way and many people do. My guess is that they separated out the cream to make butter. Then the family drank the skimmed milk. They probably used whole milk for cheese and to get buttermilk. Then any leftover whey went to the pigs. Waste not, want not!

I know how to make cheese. My grandfather taught me. When I want whole milk for cheese, I get it from the Amish.

That's about what I was thinking Kathy Lee. They seem to have milk with just about every meal. There seems to always be a pitcher of milk on the table at mealtime. No Amish around these parts :/ I just started getting raw milk from a local dairy farm. Would love to try my hand at cheesemaking! Ended up with butter the other day as I was attempting to make whipped cream lol!

Carol, that too is possible. Just haven't ever seen them doing it in any episodes so it left me wondering.

I have made butter but have yet to make cheese. Hard to come by "fresh" milk around here. I also have an old ice cream maker and some day plan on making ice cream...likely huckleberry....YUM! Found a place I can get rock salt... Speaking of making things...I tried making ketchup one time and it took soooo long to render down to get thick enough I gave up and made spaghetti sauce..

I remember a joke by a "country" comedian back in the 1960s:
"Didja hear how four hippies died from drinkin' milk? Yeah, the cow fell on 'em!"

Make sure to add a little salt and wash the butter with cool water. We make butter at school when we have the one-room schoolhouse trips each spring. Making cheese is not hard. It is just getting the whole/raw milk that can be a little difficult.

Olivia or Grandma may have done what Ma Ingalls did before they drank the milk, scalded it I still see recipes that say to scald the milk. Modern recipes say it is not necessary but I still do it if the recipe says to.

I have made apple butter also. That is fairly easy to do. Just watch at the end when it gets thick as it will burn easily! I remember my grandfather making hard cheese and cottage cheese. I have his recipes.

I would love to try raw milk! And make the cheese and butter ! The old fashion ways were healthy! If you want to make butter, all you need is heavy cream. Google butter making and there are many YouTube videos to show you how. Take just a few minutes in a food processor!
