I know I don't post here too often but it's just because my job is demanding and I haven't had much free time the past year. I do check in now and then to see what's going on and sorry to see some of the 'regulars' haven't been here as much either. Anyway, just wanted to say that I'm thrilled to be getting a chance to visit the Waltons Mountain Museum in Schuyler soon! I haven't been able to get to a Waltons reunion in Virginia yet but I'm going to be in Colonial Williamsburg for 4 days the end of April. I'm staying an extra day so I can drive over to Schuyler for a half-day and visit the museum and drive by the Hamner home. It's only about 2.5 hrs away and worth the drive! If anyone has any suggestions what else I should see in Schuyler please let me know. Since I live in Arizona I don't get many chances to be in Virginia.

I LOVE Colonial Williamsburg! Everything is nice and close in Schuyler. If you get there early, you can see it all in one day.

If anyone has any suggestions what else I should see in Schuyler please let me know. Since I live in Arizona I don't get many chances to be in Virginia. Depending on how much time you have, here are a few suggestions! When you are in Williamsburg you might like to visit, Yorktown and Jamestown. Both are nice historical sites. When you are in Williamburg, walk around the William and Mary College campus. Very pretty! Also, I love to walk around Williamsburg at night. It is so lovely to strolls the streets when it is dark. Also, if you want to do any thing special in Williamsburg, book the trips and tours from home. The popular trips often book up weeks in advance. Also, you will save time if you buy all tickets in advance. Not far above Schuyler is Charlotsville, Virginia. Ton of historical stuff to see and do. The college is worth walking around. There are many historical sites that are also worth seeing (Monterplier, Ashlawn- Highland, Michie Tavern (have lunch there), Montichello, etc.). Just google things to do in Charlotsville. Also, the downtown area has a pedestrian only area that was the old Main Street. Nice shops and cafes. There is an old clothing store for men and I wonder if it is where John Boy went to get his college clothes! Olivia and John took him to Chatlottlesville for his clothes (and Ike was disappointed that they did not buy clothes at his store). When we were in Schuyler a few months ago, Ike's store was closed as new people had bought it and were changing things. Hope it is open for you! In the area there are many nice restaurants and wineries in the area. Also, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park are very close. If you have time, take a ride North on Skyline Drive to Big Meadows (The CCC Boy) and stay the night at Skyland Resort. Or, take the ride South to Peaks of Otter and stay the night there. Have fun!

Kathy! You forgot Appomattox! Where the Civil War ended. Wait until I see David Harper to tell on you. You should really try to see it...beautiful and so full of history. You can go right from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War.

I have been to most of those places that Kathy Lee,and patrician new mention.JeannePhx,one place you need to go in Williamsburg is The Governors Palace or mansion, when we went there, they gave an example of one of the dances of that time,we all had to partner up with someone, and on the grounds there is maze that you can go through. In Norfolk there is a boat ride you can go on.If you go to Monticello be sure to Thomas Jefferson, along with other family members.

Jeanne,
See the Rockfish River Dam, you drive by the Baptist Church that Earl attended growing up and turn right and there it is. Remember the building that is in front of Earl Hamner's childhood home (you pay there to go inside the house and it's also a gift shop) was the shed that Earl would write in. If you purchase a post card and mail it at the Schuyler post office, it will be postmarked Walton's Mountain. But only if it's a post card, if it's a letter it will not have that on it. The post office is just across the road from the house, it used to be the Hamner's field/pasture, that is where they kept their cow.
There is a road across from the Baptist Church and the gift shop/shed (it runs right beside the post office). If you turn on it, right down the road on the right is the old soapstone factory that Earl's father worked at.
Right down from Ike's store is the home of Isis Ringrose. Her house was the hospital that Earl Hamner was born in. The address is: 92 Riverside Drive Schuyler Virginia 22969. Here's a picture of the front of the house:

Mrs. Ringrose opens the house for us fans during Carolyn's reunions. You will just be able to 'see' it from the outside unless you want to knock on the door and see if she will let you in.
All of this...The Rockfish River Dam, Baptist Church, the shed/gift shop, Earl's childhood house, soapstone factory, post office, Walton's Museum (it was the school that Earl attended), Ike's store and Isis Ringrose's house is all basically right together. You should also try to see the Old Rockfish Post Office. It is on the way to Schuyler:
